I think the most difficult thing to get to be able to play DND is some friends.

I got into 5e with a second hand starter set, for a long time I didn't have the skills to create homebrew campaigns so I've run through my lost mine of phandelver adventure so many times the booklets falling apart. So while the essentials kit is probably better and I would suggest getting it if your starting DnD, the starter set will always hold a place in my heart

both are good with the starter set being a more structured adventure, and the essentials kit being a more free-form adventure.

I got the essentials kit and am currently playing my first adventure with my friends!

When I started, LMOP was the only starter set so we got that. After session 1 we loved it so much we bought the core rulebooks and DOTMM. We used pre-gens until level 3 then my players quickly decided to scrap them and use the newly arrived PHB to make their own. I have now played 168 sessions, 22 of which were running that first adventure.

I jumped into it with a group that each of us got the players handbook, the DM book, and the first monster manual. Skipped the starter/essentials kits.

As a true beginner, I was enraptured with the starter set. It was so easy to see myself navigating it as a DM or a player and being able to create a continuation past lvl5/6 based on character and story options.

It seems like the starter set is like the first time playing, then essentials kit is the next few times and then you move on to the more advanced stuff! I’ve got a starter set (dragon of stormwreck isle) and will be playing for the first time on Thursday!

Another thing to note to beginners of dnd is that if the price point of items for the game like the DM's guide or player's handbook re too daunting, it is easy to find free downloadable options online. I myself have found the player's handbook, DM's guide, printable character sheets, several full length adventures including Curse of Strahd and Tomb of Annihilation and more, all online FOR FREE. Additionally, while having a lot of dice are nice to make large rolls faster, you really only need a single set of dice (and usually you won't even use them all ex. the d12 for most characters besides barbarians) and can use free apps to instantly roll lots of dice for you.

I started playing the starter set with my friends. We wanted to burn the tent the goblin was in in the cave but we failed stealth so we threw our gnome friend at him. Great session

I just bought the essentials kit since I really enjoyed baulders gate 3 and I wanted to see what DnD was all about since me and some friends wanted to try it out for the first time.

Meanwhile, with no previous DND experience, I'm attempting to homebrew my first game despite never having played DND to DM for my girlfriend who has also never played DND in a weird proposal attempt.

Probably should have used a book for us first but figured I'd try to make it special 😅

Honestly I recommend new players to get the PHB, DMG and MM set and learn the game, it would be a lot more useful for players, it will last longer than one game and those three are actually essentials for DnD.
