Yale Early Action Application Numbers Plummet

Yale received 1,000 fewer Single-Choice Early Action applications this fall than it did last fall. Middling legacies, development cases, athletes, and "underrepresented" applicants hardest hit.

SAT requirement may not be the only reason for the fall in the number of EA applicants. There is a decline in the number of applicants to colleges across the country.

Your honesty is unbelievably refreshing and you deserve a lot of respect.

How does receiving APPLICATIONS from students who didn’t submit SATs tarnish Yale’s reputation? Yale’s other admission criteria were still in play and in the end the vast majority of ADMITTED students actually submitted scores. In fact, the standard for students who didn’t submit scores was probably even higher since without that metric they would need to stand out in some way even more against a larger co-hort of students.

The ivy towers didn’t crash the past four years. This is just hyperbolic. Rich kids with curated experiences were probably the greatest beneficiaries, studying marine science off the coast of the Seychelles or something in lieu of actually studying for the test.

My son is white from an affluent CA suburb and is doing apps this year. He took the SAT once and got 1560. Weighted GPA is so-so at 4.4. Decent leadership ECs, like varsity captain, club founder, employed part-time for 4 years, etc. His counselor already told him he has no chance at Yale, Harvard or Stanford since he’s just an average Joe at his high school. Last year, 2 from his school got into Yale but they both got 1600 on SATs. 7 got into Stanford and 9 for MIT. Counselor said those students were all exceptional and my son just can’t compete because they will compare him to the other kids at his own school. Since his school is so high achieving, mostly Asian/white, his chances are slim. Counselor also said UCLA/Berkeley will be tough for the same reasons and they don’t even look at SATs. So my son is not going to apply to Yale or Harvard anymore, only Stanford because it’s in-state.

Hi Craig! I’m Jahir from Honduras and I love your videos! I recently applied as an international student to Cornell ED with a 1500 SAT and 4.0 GPA unweighted. Cornell is test-recommended starting this year. Would that play in my favor, specially as an international?

My son was admitted test optional to Yale last yr. White kid from a wealthy suburb in the south. Am willing to put his whole background against all of your students. Sat for SAT once and scored 1500. Counselor suggested submitting test optional.
Your generalization sometimes borders on ridicule.

😮 Sounds like Yale is your arch enemy.

I don't think these schools ( or anyone else ) will have a great idea of what quality of students they received in the "test-optional" era until at least this upcoming summer. I say this because My Black daugher was in the first group to apply to schools when they went Test optional during the pandemic. She's now in the middle of her senior year at Columbia -- and on pace to graduate Summa cumme, Laude. She accomplished all of this without submitting test scores in 2021. Thus, I can see why the admission folks who admitted ( and essentially recruited )her off of her HS transcripts, letters of recommendation, essays, extracurriculars, etc.., would feel like all of that sufficed in giving them a decent idea that she could handle the school's rigor if admitted. Thus, I doubt that Columbia, now in hindsight, feels like they should have accepted students with test scores instead of my daugher.

I think you’re being really rude. I promise you that gpa, extracurriculars, and honors are much more important than a stupid exam. Sats don’t show anything real except the people that can afford sat assistance.
Stop trying to sell your brand in this way. It’s embarrassing
