This is a full experiment and shows you 2 sweet potato varieties started in water and in starting mix on the same day. The starting mix method is the absolute best way to start your sweet potato slips. I also cover what to do with the slips to prepare them for planting. A whole potato on its side in starting mix. Just sit it by a window. No grow-lights needed.

I have actually gotten, so far, nearly 20 slips out of one tiny section of purple sweet potato, that I purchased on a road trip, from an organic market. I cut the top portion, about the size of a ping-pong ball, where there were buds, and placed in soil, not even a whole potato. She has, so far, been a beautiful slip producer. I praise and thank her every day for being so generous - so grateful. I am excited to see what her slips will produce this fall. this has been a fun growing experience. I love my little sweet potato "mama".

You don’t need the whole sweet potato to make plenty of slips. I’ve cut the end 4th and put it in the soil with cut side down and about 1/2 covered with potting soil. I got 18 slips! If you want them to come out faster, put an heating pad under it. I got slips sprouting in less than a week and ready to cut for rooting in water within two weeks.

This is exactly what I discovered. I started in water, but one of my potatoes cracked. I placed it into a container with dirt and was stunned by how quickly the slips sprouted. I have hordes of slips now.

It works so much better to lay them in soil and then cover several inches with peat moss and then moisten. The slips grow up through the peat moss and will have a nice root system when you pull them off. Also, the peat moss is slightly acid which helps keep the sweet potato from rotting. Credits go to sand hill preservation farm for their dedication and work and sharing their knowledge publicly so I could learn and use it! Thank you Sand Hill Preservation!

Thanks for this! I do have some sweet potatoes in water waiting for them to sprout but have felt it’s a little slow going. So I’m going to try this method today! Sweet potatoes are one of the crops I’m most excited to grow this year ❤️
