IMO brown is more versatile than grey because the most versatile trouser color is grey. Leave grey for the trousers

In my opinion, black is fine, but if you have the option of other colors, go for it!

I think it's important to look at what color/pattern would go best with as much of your wardrobe as possible. I have a navy/grey mini-checkered sport coat that goes perfect with navy, charcoal and khaki colored pants. It covers most of my bases for the office.

For sports jackets I would always get a slight pattern, otherwise it's always gonna look like an orphaned jacket from a suit.

My advice; make sure it doesn’t look like a suit jacket. A plaid or check pattern will help with this and add contrast to solid color trousers.

Brown is also a good option in my opinion. Whatever color you choose, plain colors do not look good, rather look for something at least slightly mottled or so, so that it's made visually interesting.

Totally agree but your coloring plays a role too. My husband has very cool tones and he suits the gray the best but my son looks best in the brown tones. Of course the navy does look good on everyone!
