LAB TEST ON 2 YEARS OLD ENGINE OIL! WHEN TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL? SHELL HELIX REVIEW ENGINE OIL EXPIRY

When should you change engine oil? Engine oil change time? Oil change in km? Should I change engine oil every year? Synthetic oil change km or time? Black engine oil? Oil change in Maruti Suzuki? Motor oil change schedule? Can Engine last more than a year?

When should you change your engine oil? Should we do engine oil change based on KM mileage or year time interval? In this video we do a lab test on a 2 year oil engine oil which was used in a low running engine. The question of when to do oil change always arises for low running cars and motorcycle so I went ahead with the engine oil lab test on this 2 year oil engine oil. In this video we will discuss on the change in Viscosity of the engine oil after 2 years along with other parameters like contaminants, wear metals, additives etc.

Short trips do the most "damage" to engine oil.

The reason is that in a modern EFI engine, more fuel is injected when the engine is cold in order to keep it running (which is why you can smell fuel coming out of the exhaust in the early stages).

That fuel will seep past the piston rings (compression as well as oil scrapper rings), and end up in the engine oil.

This causes the oil to become both diluted and to break down (detergents in the fuel).

However when the engine oil gets hot (the engine's normal operating temperature) and particularly when the car is driven on the highway,

The fuel that is present in the engine oil gets turned back into a vapour and gets removed via the PCV system (where it gets sucked into the engine, unless you have a catch can).

If this doesn't happen the oil will break down quicker (which is also why "highway miles" are less damaging than "city miles"),

Some engines are more sensitive to this than others,

The ones that I know about (due to having the same car), is the Toyota Camry (2011-2017)

Where if you don't change the oil regularly, you will kill the engine (the piston rings become jammed off centre causing the cylinder bore to become damaged).

Oil and filters are cheap, engines are not.

So stop trying to save a few dollars, at the risk of damaging your engine.

I use Motul 10w40 on my Ntorq, TVS recommends 3000km or 4 months. My Ntorq runs 2000km average in 4 months and i always change on timely basis. My friend says that i am over caring and over spending. But i think i am doing the right thing. Before this i had a second hand activa on which i learned how to ride and how to properly care of a scooter that activa taught me alot of things before i purchased my Ntorq in 2019. Now some of the things like changing oil, cleaning air filter, disc pads, sparkplug, brakeshoe etc i do it myself and the feeling of caring your vehicle yourself is just something else. Guys like you and some other channels encouraged me and taught me alot of things.

800 miles in 2 full years on my Toyota Tundra. Thank you for helping me answer my question. I’m leaning towards do at least a drain and fill

very good video, I have not followed the OEM schedule since the price of oils have become very expensive. I just assess the oil when I check and if it feels viscous, is relatively clean and passes the smell test it goes for anouther round.

Great confirmation to my knowledge that a 2 years old oil with gradual 5k is still pretty much acceptable. I have a car that its oil is 7 years with 3k on it. I may do an UOA on it next year or so. I've Seen lots of UOAs in oils at 5 years oil doing fine at low mileages/kms like in this video ... I believe that it is possible, in a sound engine, below 5k you can keep the oil decades long on it without harm of wearing it. Depends a lot on the engine. A misfiring engine maybe, can't handle 1 year 5k miles ...

Most of us with any brains will do what it says in the manual. Kms or time whichever comes the sooner. Oil is cheap. Engines are expensive. Changing it early does not hurt. Changing it late does.

Oil usually gets thicker over time as it goes through the heat thinner. If your oil is getting thinner over is most likely due to fuel dilution.

Excellent review. I usually put very low mileage on my vehicles so I used to stretch the oil change to 2 years, sometimes I forget to change it even at the 3rd year. I always use the best synthetic oils due to delayed oil changes, but I think I need to cap the intervals at 1 to 1.5 years. Thanks for this great informative review. If you want any old oil for testing, I can give it to you from my vehicles.

We use shell advance ultra 15w50 fully synthetic in my discover 125st model 2012. I change engine oil under 6500-7000km aur annually wise every 15 month from old to new .Now my bike runs 33000km I have no wear and tear in engine.
Performance of my 125st is very smooth and refined.
I use shell advance ultra 4t 10w40 fully synethic in my tvs ntorq model 2016 it's odometer is above 12000km no issue change my engine oil as above mentioned same as i changed in my 125st bike.

Nice video. One simple yet important factor to increase the drain interval is checking the oil level after every 1000 km and top up. Usually with bikes, the engine oil capacity is between 1 and 1.5 litres. So we would buy 2 litres ofcourse. So best is to keep the 0.5 litres safe and use it for top up everytime the oil level is near the bottom level mark.

To me, the most accurate measure for engines is the quantity of fuel consumed, / the amount of oil replaced in an oil change. I consider this accurate, no matter how the engine is loaded or used. The only variable is oil temperature, above the break-down temperature of the oil. To determine when to change oil in a gearbox, go by the amount of WORK transmitted through the gears, divided by the quantity of oil in the gear case.

I have used the same engine oil in my petrol polo for almost 2 years but it ran just 3000 kms during this period. To be honest I didn't feel much change in performance or sound but still I got it changed after 2 years as a preventive measure!

You can judge the condition of the oil by useing the oil drop test. Useing the dip stick put a drop of oil on a white calling card or sheet of paper, impuraties will be floating around in the middle of the drop. When you see Black Carbon it´s time to change the oil/filter.

Thanks Dear for the detailed analysis, God Bless You😊 but what about the high running engines like my celerio vxi green ( CNG) runs around 250 kms every alternate day and I am using Helix 5w30 fully synthetic so after how many kms I should go for an oil change.drive mostly in city.i am eagerly waiting for your reply as today I have to plan the oil Change.Kindly guide me. Have an Amazing Day 😀

Maybe it's a stupid question but how do I interpret a viscosity of 54.56mm^2/s ? I have seen other dimensions and they are easier for me to interpret.
