My friends: "The worst thing she can say is no."

My crush: "I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself."

Miyazaki: a pacifist
Also Miyazaki: just casually murders a room full of programmers

“We humans are losing faith in ourselves.” Such a powerful and true sentiment.

“If you look closely you can actually pinpoint the exact moment his heart breaks in two.”

"An artificial intelligence could present us grotesque movements which we humans can't imagine." I think this is the part that Miyazaki takes offence to. A machine can not imagine human pain, this whole process shows the removal of human empathy and understanding from art.

This is the equivalent of showing a microwave to Gordon Ramsay.

With the sudden popularity of A.I. "art", I now fully understand what Miyazaki meant after all these years.

“We’d like to build a machine that can draw pictures like humans do.”

That statement is crazy.

After watching this I don't think he was criticizing the animation itself, but rather the idea that an AI that mimics human suffering as a means for animating is wrong. If you're utilizing an AI to animate suffering, you remove the human element of what it means to actually suffer, thus trivializing it in an exchange for making the process of animating it more convenient. If you must animate suffering then illustrate it by hand so that there is a gravitas to it, felt by both the creator and the audience.

This seems more relevant than ever before.

These dudes were probably so hyped to meet Hayao Miyazaki who I am sure is like an absolute hero to these who approached him. They probably got themselves so excited they convinced each other this was a great idea. The result? Hayao Miyazaki not only hated it but has lost some faith in humanity in the process.

This was 6 years ago, I can only imagine how Mizaki must feel now, that the average person can pump out an ungodly amount of AI art at a fraction of the time, even in the style of Studio Gibli.

I feel bad for the man being brought to tears, but like, at the same time...what was he thinking? Miyazaki is the KING of traditionalism and investment in the "natural". He clearly loathes the idea of industrialism and consumerism dominating the human experience. I'm not saying this mindset is superior or always correct, but with that in mind, why on earth would you present something like this to him and expect it to be accepted? Know your audience, dude.

Everyone seems to think Miyazaki rejects the technology simply because he's a traditional, hand-drawn type of animator. I don't see it that way. He emphasizes above all what he sees as its treatment of pain and how it's "creepy". He's a life-affirming artist, and we see those values in his films. His vision is very dear to him, so I understand his strong response. I still feel bad for the programmers, they had a strong product, but they were still hurt.

Man those poor guys looked so heartbroken. On the other hand, if you want to bluid a machine who draws pictures like a human being, you don't present that proyect to someone who has spent most of his life drawing, that's just stupid, it's like saying to his face "hey we're trying to make a robot that can replace the work you have done for decades"... stupid.

They presented it to the wrong Miyazaki. Should have gone with Hidetaka Miyazaki(demons souls creator).
