Pop-up Emitter or Drain Basin? Which One Works Best for Discharge?

I want to talk about the most important thing to any drainage system - the discharge. The problem is with vegetation like our grass is usually what does a system in. I see so many flooded yards over the discharge. So let's talk about all the different ways of discharging your roof runoff system.

Whatever your drainage situation is, if you're taking it to a a grassy swale or ditch ,you really have to watch how you go about daylighting.

Years ago I really just kind of gave up on the pop-up because the grass grew over it so quick. So we went to just putting in speedy basins. Then we got a lot of complaints about the smell. These basins hold a lot of water. That's the beauty about the pop-up emitter. It doesn't hold very much water. We always drill a few holes when we put them in and that way they can just leach that little bit of water that's in a pop-up emitter. But what about the grass growing over the pop up emitter?

We now have a turf restrictor plate that prevents grass from growing over the top of where the system daylights.

Installed an under sidewalk gutter with your pop up emiter. Works flawlessly in Minnesota love it. Thank you!

When I used a pop-up, the problem was the guys mowing the lawn. When they went over the pop-up, the blades created a partial vacuum, raising the center which was then eaten by the blades.

Thats the answer i was looking for..you drill a few holes in the bottom. I live in colorado mostly dry climate and i have a short 6 ft run. So i dont need a long knife cut. I dont have room for it and its all rocks. So no issue with grass growing over. Thanks.

You should patent the idea if you didn't already! Turf restrictor plate is a great idea.

I still like the 9x9 & 12x12 drain basins for an outlet, however, on a house I built 4 years ago, the lawn guy let the grass grow completely over it (downspouts hard piped with 4” schedule 40 PVC due to potential vehicle traffic). A Maple tree was 20’ away from the outlet basin. An explorer/ feeder root found its way to the basin / grate (covered by the grass), it turned on a 90 degree, made another 90 sideways and into the inlet pipe, growing towards the first downspout, which on most mornings even without rain, would drip a certain amount of water into the trunk line. The 1-1/4 to 1-1/2” diameter root broke the grate and grew 40+ feet through the pipe towards the house. I was certainly happy we hard piped it, because once we got the basin out and its adapter off, the root had nothing to grab onto and it pulled straight out in one piece. I took pictures and the owner who was up north at his primary home, couldn’t believe it. Needless to say… a new lawn man soon appeared. 😂

The corner of my yard that has a pop-up emitter is soggy as all hell. Like, ruin your shoes soggy.

Would you say it's typical/common to have a wet corner of the backyard, in exchange for the rest of the yard (and the finished walkout basement) being nice and dry?

@8:00 you called those weeds ‘grass’!🤣🤣
Get some herbicide on that ‘grass’ and now we have turf grass! 🤓
Having a home built and I need some of your products from the down spout to the edges of the lawn for proper drainage. 😁
Have been watching your channel for years now and I like the ‘how’ you show and explain the ‘why’ as well.

Ordering some now...i need the pop ups...I'm way down south in straight clay, so i am going with the pop ups on this job...im going approximately 280 ft away with no growth at day light.

Smells? Holding water? Cut the bottom out of a catch basin and place it over about a foot of 1 inch rock if the soil won’t drain. Worked very well for me.

So have you tried slots? I see holes being drilled for many purposes, in this case water drainage. I have used a coal fired forge for many years and the best design to prevent restriction of air flow is to use slots. Holes allow detritus collect around edge and squeeze closed, seldom does that happen on a slot. My guess is a slot has 2 sides which won't support the other.

Good points concerning the downside of a basin. Unfortunately, I'm dealing with extreme water flow and not sure if pop ups can handle the flow without backing up. The amount of water I'm trying to divert during a heavy down pour is about 12 feet wide by three to four inches deep, which runs through a back yard swale. The heavy flow dissipates about 30 minutes after the rain stops. My plan is to install two 4" x 10' corragated pipes (side by side) at entry covered by cobblestone with a solid corragated run of about 50' to discharge point. I'm far from an expert and would appreciate feedback.

Just built my home and got moved in July of 23. Had to make driveway paver come back and put a sleeve under driveway as his crew had landlocked a downspout near walkway. It looks like 3 or 4 inch pipe like your blue but thinner and have heard even if you dig out both sides of walk way it will just tear trying to get it out. Any ideas on how to fix this with your pipe and emitter?

Nice idea. Would a square version be better to allow you to use your edger around it easier?

Great info and video!! so sir, between my house and my neighbors house there’s a low spot and that water is running in my yard and I need to get it from rolling in my yard and get it into some type of drainage system down to the street it’s about 50 feet maybe 60 feet of pipe how should I do this? With your materials? Thank you.

I used a PVC DWV Sanitary Tee with the grate like the catch basin as a top and filled the hole with pea gravel so no standing water.

Hello. Dekalb Illinois area. Want to install some wye downspout adapters for 3 gutters up front connected to heavy duty pipes you supply. My question is can I bring all 3 gutters into one line using your Y corrugated adapters, then hose into a cleanup bassin, then hose continued down to final pop-up V2 emitter?

So I need to get my sump discharge away from the house. Is it better to use the corrugated or straight walled PVC? Do I then just use the fabric at the end with stone on top of fabric and pipe on the stone. Seems that your pop up with turf plate will be what I want also.

Can I use a 90 degree elbow, and slotted pop up emitter cap as a catch on the end of our new drain?
