I think Palpatine knew of the Grand Master Yoda's abiltiy to sense which side a forcing weilding individual has. If you notice on the Clone wars, Palpatine never stood too close or too far from Master Yoda. Perhaps Count Dooku informed Darth Sidious of his former master's abilities.
