The main issue with the original windows tablets with win 8 on ARM is that people didn't understand they were ARM. They thought they were cheap tablets they could use to download all their fav programs like they usually would. Then got mad when they couldn't and returned them all.

ARM is gonna take a while before it reaches feature parity with x86_64, but I'm looking forward to it!

Something really crazy to think about is how Windows used to run on _everything_, ARM included. They dropped a lot of it since those architectures were pretty much dead in the PC space and most other places too, but there's still stuff left behind of them in the executable format and stuff. Windows 8 also improved the situation with Project OneCore, which made Windows less fragmented across architectures, which goes to show how Windows Vista and 8 made huge improvements to Windows but sucked to use.

I am looking forward to RISC-V SOCs that can give me a fully open source system. It will be the biggest game changer since it would allow chip designs worked on by many companies and could progress faster than any current chip out now.

Are we going to see chips go beyond translating and have hybrid chips? Like a big little design on notebooks. But the little is ARM and the Big is a few x86 cores.

"that's right, the same company that probably made the chipset inside of your phone"

Windows 10 IoT Core, released in 2015 was the first real ARM based Windows!

It has not really seen much use, but it did run UWP applications with some tinkering! I'm pretty sure there was also another Windows 10 ARM release in that same lineup?

When he said "2018 was years ago now" I thought he was being sarcastic because it feels like it was only 1 or 2 but its been almost 4....

2:02 Note that translating x86 instructions to arm instructions in real time is NOT emulation though. It's inaccurate to describe it as being "emulated" and more accurate to say that it's been "translated" or "binary recompiled"

I’m in the opinion that Microsoft is harming the their efforts in this space by letting Qualcomm drive their product stack.

The M1 makes even Qualcomm’s high end products look like a cheap atom and they don’t have anything in the pipe that will change this. Microsoft should get in to the silicon biz if they want to compete.

I got a M1 MacBook, and I love everything about it … except for the operating system. It’s light, brilliantly made and has insane battery life for just over the price of a decent mobile phone.

Can’t wait for Microsoft to catch up, as I just prefer windows, and I’m infinitely more productive on a PC.

Fun fact: The HoloLens 2 also runs the arm version of windows and some arm UWP apps can run on the HoloLens 2 as well. They are just regular windows that float around as hologram in your room and you can use a normal mouse and keyboard to control them.

'2018 was years ago now'

I sometimes still can't believe that happened.

1:03 "Windows on ARM first appeared on 2018" - I'm laughing, microsoft is laughing, my surface rt is laughing, the other one aswell

Windows 11 ARM preview works on a Raspberry Pi 4B. It's not the fastest experience but I am amazed that it works not so poorly!

Also worth mentioning: the Qualcomm exclusivity deal is also partly why Bootcamp on M1 Macs isnt possible (for the ARM version of Windows). Once thats possible, i wouldnt mind getting into learning some MacOS on an M2 Macbook Air or something.

I really like what Apple is doing with their MacBooks, especially when it comes to battery life, but I would prefer to stay with Windows if I can find a descent performing Windows laptop at a reasonable price. I'm not in the market for a new laptop at the moment, so I'll just keep an eye open to see what is available. Thank you for the video.

I've tried MacOS so many times, and simply do not like it. I've gotten too used to touch on my Linux and Windows machines, and M1 Linux is still in it's infancy. The future is bright though

My old Windows RT Surface had multi day battery life. Most ly cause you couldnt do anything on it but browse and use windows store apps that didnt exist back then.
