Excellent detail on the video - exactly what I was looking for. Solves my problem of not wanting to finish my door and jam after installation. By removing the door from the jam, I can now stain and seal everything prior to hanging...Thank YOU! I can finally get a bathroom door hung for my quilting studio...YES!

Wow!! I bought 5 prehung doors to replace. I tried the first one and did not do a very good job. It wasn't horrible, but it was still a little off. Then I watched this video. Making the frame pre-plumb is genius, and I never would have thought of it. Just finished the second one and it is PERFECT!! I am not what you would call a "handy" guy and this is going to get me major brownie points with the wife. THANK

pluming the jamb before you put the jamb in was a great tip.

Use a 2-1/2" screw for each hinge, going thru hinge and into jamb and into stud. Also use a 2-1/2 nail to nail jamb into studs rough opening. Nail casing using a 2" nail into studs and 1-1/4" nail into the jamb. You can use hand nail or a nail gun, either works. Have fun!

Ali,  I usually "eyeball" the gap between the door and jamb and put shims behind the jamb to keep the gap uniform, even at the bottom of the frame as necessary.  If you are referring to putting shims underneath the side jambs because the floor is out of level, yes I sometimes do that to get the the head (horizontal) jamb level.  Once the jamb is all nailed off, you can remove those shims at the bottom.  If the floor is quite out of level, you may actually have to trim one side jamb otherwise one jamb may be sitting off the floor with a large gap underneath it.

Al replies to Norman - the door was hung on it's hinges, mating up with it's accompanying door frame/jamb, all purchased from the factory that way.  Hence the term, "a pre-hung door".  The door was pre-hung on it's hinges at the factory.  Hope that helps Norman.

Question for Ben Schmanke- good vid, liked it.
Have you tried the door installation brackets they sell at Home Depot in the interior door aisle for prehung doors? Freaking awesome, less than 10 minutes had mine perfect. Theres no shimming, just attach 6 brackets to door frame, draw level line down drywall, screw door to wall based on level line. Unbelievably easy. Ther 5 bucks, in my mind worth every penny. HD employee showed me them. Says pros even use them instead of shims now. U try em yet?

Do you ever put shims at the bottom of the frame so you can adjust the clearance b/w the door and the jamb? If not, how do you make sure the clearance is uniform?

I appreciate the tips, however for me I would have preferred less focus on the knob and more on leviling of the frame
