YouTube Restricted Mode - 'Enabled By Network Administrator' - Forced On by Public Wifi 😮

Turns out network administrators can force YouTube Restricted Mode to be turned on when you join their wifi network. In this case I was on the public wifi at Center Parcs and noticed that comments were disabled.. even on my account which definitely isn't set to restricted mode.

Looking in settings it said 'Turned on by your network administrator' and it wasn't a setting you could change! If I disconnect from the public wifi & go back on 4G it re-enables the option and restores the setting back to normal.

See I have the opposite. Restricted mode is forced on when I use my cell data instead of wifi

For me it is the opposite when I’m on my cellular data it is restricted but if I turn on a VPN or switch to WiFi it works and this only started happening after I switch to T-Mobile I use to be sprint

Thank you, I never thought it was the public WIFI doing this, I was staying a Travelodge hotel and using the WIFI, soon as I connected to my mobile data, restricted mode was lifted. thank you.

You saved my life oml
I’m at centre parcs and had their WiFi on and was looking for about an hour on how to turn restricted mode off
Ended up deleting YouTube and as soon as I heard you say “centre parcs” I almost cried 💀💀

I was having this problem with my home wifi. Thanks for the diagnostic.
It was solved by entering router admin interface and tinkering with DNS options and parental restrictions. No need to change anything, just move sliders leaving same config and reapply changes. Something was corrupted somehow.

OMG, currently at Elveden CP when my son said earlier he couldn’t comment on videos. I’ve just looked & neither can I. We both have our own channels. Just turned off the Wi-Fi to test and now working!

I’m at Centerparcs too and the same thing happened! I could only leave this comment by logging off Wi-fi! It seems unusually restrictive. Thanks for doing the groundwork.

This issue literally irritated me, no solutions found. But your video make it worked, thanks a lot.

It's all enforced by DNS on the local WiFi network you're joining. They force you to use YouTube restricted mode DNS servers and this is how it works. Essentially it's proxying all queries for YouTube to the restricted servers. You have to either use a VPN or mobile data to get around this (basically don't use the WiFi that's doing this!). It is unusually restrictive though. Edit: I guess you could try and point DNS to Google standard servers instead of theirs? Otherwise like I say use a VPN or mobile data.

I didn't even have to watch the video. Your caption made me realize that's what the problem was, so I had to leave you a thumbs up and a thank you. I watched the video anyway. Thanks

Idk if anyone needs this anymore, I'm currently working for Tmobile US, if you are a Sprint/Tmobile customer try going into your online Sprint/Tmobile account to PREFFRENCES > LIMITS AND PERMISSIONS > BLOCK ADULT CONTENT AND MALWARE and disable that setting, idk how many this might help but it's worth giving it a shot

Edit: I realized they were only doing this to fiddle with the settings, with the goal of me going to bed.

I am having this issue with a private Wi-Fi network, my parents use eero Secure and they turned on restricted mode today. They said they would turn it off tomorrow, i'll just have to see. I found YouTube's restricted mode to be too restrictive, because it is hiding a lot of videos, because they have to be manually reviewed before being allowed on restricted mode. On top of that, it hides every single comment, so I basically can't see if a video is helpful or not based on the comments. The reason I can comment right now is because I am using another dns server so the default dns server wouldn't hide the comments. Anyways, I hate at what YouTube has done to restricted mode. I wish it only hid age restricted videos, and not "potentially mature" content. It's like being on YouTube kids but with less restrictions. I AM 13! THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!

Thank you!! I'm experiencing this right now. You helped me figure out the problem. Apparently I'm not allowed to watch True Crime videos on my lunch break at work.... 🙄 I put on my data and it works just fine. Thanks!

I have a different problem. I am using the same YouTube account on my iPhone and iPad, but the iPhone is restricted because I used the school WiFi once. Now whenever my phone is on cellular, it is on Restricted mode, while my iPad with the same YouTube account is not.
