Day 1 - The Day of Testing - Holy Monday
Показать описание
Join us on the Road To Resurrection with Rev. Aisha Davis.
Today marks the first day of Holy Week: Holy Monday. It is the day known as the Day of Testing.
If you have your bibles, open them up to the book of Matthew chapter 21: 12-17; 18-22. (Read the scripture). This is the Word of God; thanks be to God.
As you can see in the text, there were two major events that took place on this day. Jesus cleanses the temple and the withering of the fig tree.
When reading verses 12-17, there are a few things that stand out:
• God will not allow His house to be misrepresented. They were using the temple for deceptive activities (money changers and selling pigeons). They moved away from God's original intention for his house. God's house is a house of prayer, not a den for robbers.
• Once God cleared his house and removed everything that was not supposed to be there, He was able to continue his work of healing.
• Perspective: I wonder how those who were kicked out of the temple felt? Were they convicted? Were they upset? I mean think about how you have felt when God caught you in acts of disobedience.
• As I think about the Scribes & Chief Priests, I’m reminded that there's always going to be someone who is upset about you doing what God has called you do to. Someone will always have something to say about it.
Challenge: This passage challenges us in a few ways:
1. Remember that God's house should be used with the right intentions and motives... to bring others into the Kingdom of God. So often we get distracted by campaigns, scandals, dramatizations within the church that we lose sight of its original purpose. We begin to choose our agenda over God’s agenda. To be a house of prayer, one that heals the human heart and saves souls.
2. Don't be a part of the problem, be a part of the solution. BE a part of the Kingdom building. Regardless of what others say, continue to uphold the character and obedience of Christ.
Transition: In the verse 18, Jesus moves from cleansing the temple to the fig tree.
We all have heard that saying that anything is possible with Christ. Scripture itself declares it to be so. But, how many of us truly believe that to be true? I know we say it, but do we believe it? Do we put action behind those words? In this passage, Jesus reminds us of his character. He reminds us that he has authority over all creation. Like the disciples, we too often question Him saying "Jesus how do you perform that miracle?"
Jesus simply answers (v21) If you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain be taken up and thrown into the sea, and it will happen." Have faith and do not doubt. We often have faith, but once the spirit of doubt creeps in, we lose sight of what we KNOW that God is able to do. Whatever we as in prayer, we will receive, if we have faith.
With all of the tumultuous circumstances that we are surrounded by every day, from a global pandemic to job security, evictions, death, disease, hate crimes… I know that it may seem impossible to believe that God can do the impossible. I'm aware that society as conditioned us to think that we should receive everything that we want instantaneously, but that's just not the case. Sometimes you have to wait. It's not about faking it tilyou make it, its about FAITHING it til you make it. Keep on believing, keep faithing until you receive your answer.
And Guess what, as believers we have the joy and hope of knowing that if God did it before, he can do it again. Many didn't believe that Christ would be resurrected after his crucifixion, but those who believed were able to rejoice in the reality of His resurrection.
So, on this Holy Monday, remember let us not be hypocrites in God's house. Let us not misrepresent Him. Let us not operate outside of God's original intention for the church. Continue to allow your actions to be based on the life and character of Jesus Christ and participate in building the kingdom of God.
Let us have faith and believe without doubting that Jesus can do the impossible and with him we can do the same.
Invite a friend or family member to join you as we celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
See you again tomorrow. Be encouraged.
