I Grew up in the Bay Area of California and in my 20s I once rented a couch in someone's living room for $1200/month. Now in my 30s I live in Missouri in a one bedroom house with my dog on about 1/2 acre. I'm surrounded by trees/empty lots and one neighbor. I have a fenced-in back yard and am a five-minute walk away from downtown in a rural town 30min drive from Kansas City. My rent is $650/month. I now have zero debt, I own a cheap truck ('97 tacoma ~$1200), and I am very happy and comfortable. I can't believe it took me until I was 30 to leave CA, but now I can't recommend it enough.

Six years ago I started putting money in to a 401k, saving money for the first time. Out here I can afford to send 20% of every paycheck to that 401k. My point is if you live in any coastal democrat-run city, it will never get better. IT WILL NEVER GET BETTER. If you don't start making plans to get out of there and improve your life, you will just rot with it. Get yourself and your family out of that shit right now. I promise you will not regret it.

When I moved to San Francisco in 1998 as a class A sheet metal fabricator with a car full of tools I fell in ❤. Cheap restaurants in the mission district, cheap motels, and a night life like no other. BART was $9 to go under the bay. When I left every new skyscraper in Oakland was subsidized housing.
