"As the stripes on my back chip and dry" gave me a feeling of having kept the numbers of times spent together engraved and carved in the back of your mind. And when Niki said, "to attain some level of permanence in somebody else's memory or inner world", it confirms it is indeed a reference to having tattooed a tally mark of remembering how many until there's none no more to count. Tattoo=permanence.
