Adrian Lyne's 1997 adaptation of LOLITA stars Jeremy Irons, Dominique Swain & Melanie Griffith.

The film was met with much controversy in Australia, not given a theatrical release until 1999. The New York Times awarded the film a 'Critic's Pick', declaring it "rich beyond what anyone could have expected, the film repays repeated viewings... it turns Humbert's madness into art."

Respectable schoolteacher Humbert Hubert (Jeremy Irons) marries his landlady Charlotte Haze (Melanie Griffith) so that he can get closer to her young daughter Lolita (Dominique Swain), with whom he is madly in love. His unfulfilled desire for the girl brings him to the edge of insanity and threatens to destroy the object of his obsession.

I think everybody missed the point about this movie. It's not an erotic creepy type of shit, it's about a man who rewrites his reality to try to make its fucked up ideas less disturbing to himself and excuse his actions in the worst way possible. Yes the girl is shown as oversexualized and seductive, because we see the distorted point of view of the pedo, not the objective reality.

Nabakov was a great novelist. I think he believed this topic, which combines aspects of evil, debauchery, and taboo, was a good mirror for modern American society. The scene is fabulously funny.

It still bugs me that Frank Langella was billed above Dominique, this was only her second movie after her small part in Face/Off and she was brilliant as Lolita.

Since people seem to be discovering this movie recently. I thought I might share something interesting

For those who don’t know, there is a French song in the early 2000s called ‘Moi…Lolita’ by Alizeé. As its namesake says, it is a song that seems to be inspired from the original novel. It’s mostly in the POV of Dolores, or a girl figure who is similar to her. It's a catchy tune on the surface, but the translated lyrics is something a bit different.

FACT: When Dolores puts her braces in the glass, her little feet are visible, and they look messy and dirty. But when she is playing with Humbert and gets close to him, he sees her legs and feet, clean and impeccable, with red painted nails. I don't think this was a edition mistake, but rather Humbert's point of view, who didn't see any defects in her, but rather saw her as sickly perfect.
