Best acting by an actress and actor I have ever seen... exceptionally difficult story to act but both were absolutely brilliant... heartbreaking story but no one else could have ever portrayed it the way these 2 did.

This book ripped my guts out and handed them to me. Humbert Humbert is an unreliable narrator in Part 1 of the book, he believes they were totally in love and has deluded himself, but in Part 2 he comes to be tormented by his memory as he comes to face the reality of his trip with Lolita. The truth is that she was a child and she was suffering the entire time, utterly alone, manipulating a man who was using her in any small way she could to find happiness - helpless beyond anything. She concealed this fact but not well enough to keep Humbert from noticing. And in the end he realizes what he'd done to her, that he stole her innocence and inflicted his own lusts onto her, and that nothing he would ever do would make up for it.

Casting director should have been fired at the outset. Jeremy Irons was an ok choice, but the title character and most especially Melanie Griffith were absolutely horrible actresses. Kubrick's casting was vastly better, but he went overboard with Peter Sellers.
