How was the Light which we can't see Discovered? 🤯 w/ Neil deGrasse Tyson

The best information about Herschel’s experiments is found in his original papers. His recorded data and many of his comments appear to have been taken directly from his lab notes, and their freshness and authenticity come through even today. The biggest challenge reading his work is to follow his line of reasoning through many digressions and pages of raw temperature data.

In a paper read before the Royal Society on March 27, 1800, Herschel called this warmth felt at a distance “radiant heat.” This description is still a good working term for infrared radiation. The term “infrared” did not enter scientific vocabulary until the 1880s. Infra is Latin for “below,” but researchers have been unable to trace the source of who initially coined the name.

Only an engineer or scientist can understand why he geeks out here. 😂 Its so obvious for ppl now, but to have the aptitude to even think it is so brilliant.

He gives me so much hope. My son is fascinated by astronomy and, to some extent, astrophysics and when I see this guy getting paid well for his knowledge and presence it makes me think my son will be able to pay for college.

Herschel was an excellent composer as well. Love his symphonies!

Thats such a human thing to name it though. "Oh, it's not ME who can't see it, the problem is obviously with this unfit, wack ass light".

Neil maybe a bit out there from time to time, but when he is doing his core work as a science educator he is a mesmerizing and inspiring speaker.
