Painting Light and Form

By understanding how different light sources work, including falloff and reflections, you can paint realistic lighting and shadows in your artwork.

Understanding different light sources is key to setting mood in your paintings. Light bulbs emit light in all directions, causing falloff so distant objects look darker. The sun, being far and bright, acts as directional light with negligible falloff. Soft light happens when light scatters through translucent materials like clouds, softening shadows and creating occlusion shadows. Considering brightness, distance, direction of light sources, and reflected light helps you create realistic, vibrant artwork.

I always loved the light and shadow instructions by Marco Bucci, but Jon takes it even further. Thank you!

For those curious, light fall-off is also called the Inverse Square Law.
Every time you double the distance to a light source, the apparent brightness perceived from it is reduced to a quarter of what it was.
For example, if you have a light bulb at 100 meters away from you and an apparent brightness of 100 lumens, that level of luminosity will be reduced to 25 lumens when you move to 200 meters from the light bulb.
It also applies to any mechanical wave traveling through a medium but it's most commonly used for light.

I've always struggled with lighting and form (especially as someone with a very stylized art style) and this explanation of how light works is MASSIVELY helpful. I'm going to try this out next time I study. Thank you!

I wish that somewhere in the Title, Description or Video it says the name of the artist that is giving the lesson.

Are you sure that reflected light follows the normal reflection rule? I thought that only worked for mirror polished sourfaces and that matte ones diffuse the same way as scattering...
