I can't even imagine the terror of the people in the airliner, who had to go through free fall for however long, knowing that they were going to die.

I also feel really bad for for the sole survivor. Imagine how much survivors guilt he's gonna experience.

Edit: you guys really don't know how survivors guilt works. Pretty dumb in my opinion to just post a comment without even researching if what you're saying is true (and it's not)

to those not very into aviation, air to air collisions are actually way more common than you think they are, like it may just seem like "oh well how can they crash into each other with so much skies to spare" and honestly even as a person who has been into aviation for quite a while, i don't exactly get this myself either, yes i get the reason for specific incidents, but it has lead me to believe that air to air collisions are just a symptom of poor maintenance, bad airport and/or badly trained pilots, i mean there's one example i think is quite strange, kazakhstan airlines flight 1907, that collided with a saudi airlines flight on takeoff while it was landing, check that one out if you're interested

You left out some very important information. This incident led to massive changes. In the past, military ATC and Commercial ATC worked as completely different entities, just about never talking with one another. There have been a lot more similar accidents, but it was this one, that resulted in the two organizations, to work with one another.
