Used Car Review: Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

By combining concept car styling with a luxurious interior and the off-road ability you'd expect of a car wearing the Land Rover badge, the Evoque is one of the most desirable compact premium SUVs money can buy, and has been runaway success since its launch in 2011. But does it make sense as a used purchase? In this CarGurus Used Car Review Chris Knapman talks through a few of the things to consider if you're thinking of buying a second-hand Evoque.

Written review:

Pros
An affordable route to Range Rover ownership
Styling still looks fresh after more than a decade
Good to drive on all surfaces

Cons
Convertible is not as good to drive as the hard top
Surprisingly small in the back for a car of this size
Reliability is iffy, so expect some unexpected bills

The CarGurus verdict
If you’re after a stylish, smallish SUV and practicality isn’t top of your list of requirements, then the Evoque is an excellent choice, and still looks fresh many years after its first introduction. It’s very desirable, which means it should hold its value well when you come to sell it.

Reliability is far from its strongest suit, so take your time when you’re looking for a used example, but with so many Evoques on the market, there should be plenty that are worth your cash. If you can find a good one, there’s every chance you’ll be very chuffed with it.

My partner and I got a 2016 model Evoque in December with 57, 000km on it for about $40kAUD, and for the first few months was problem free.
First log book service was scheduled for March so we took it in, they did their thing, and a few days later we get DEF low.

Turns out this was not part of the service, which they forgot to mention, and we didn't even know what DEF was at the time. A bit of research and we figured it out, topped it up and all is well.

Now we're getting DEF Quality Incorrect error and the dealer is saying they need to replace the DPF (no errors about DPF in the car) with a $6k repair bill. We got a 2 year 200, 000km warranty on it, but apparently this isn't covered? and they also tried to suggest it was our fault for using the car wrong.
The day this error appeared was in the middle of a 160km round trip through country highways, which is.. exactly the type of driving they said would fix it.
So now we have a dealer trying to rip us off, refusing warranty, and a car that is threatening to permanently shut down in 500km if we don't pay to fix it.

Sure it's a lovely car to look at and drive, but it was already stretching our budget to get something this nice for a change, only to have them try to take more money 6 months later.
Fuel economy isn't exactly great either. 4.5L/100km highway and 6.1L/100km city is what's claimed, yet we get 8.6 and 10.8 respectively, almost double. Neither of us are remotely leadfooted and prefer a smooth and casual drive.

In Bahrain Range Rovers lose 80% of their value in 2 years. Toyota Landcruisers hold their price for decades. Audi is just garbage they don't sell and those that do have zero retail value, A decade ago Mercedes and BMW lost their place to Lexus and Chevy. It is interesting how each market is so different.

I have owned a Jaguar X type for 10 years.Although I have been pleased with the car, every time I need to fix something the agents part prices are crazy here in South Africa. I replaced a wheel for $100 USD from UK (local agency wants $450 USD) Actuator needed replacing, locally from Agents they will only sell with Turbo for $1600 USD. I managed to get Actuator from USA for $100. Something stinks of profiteering? Not a good advert for Jaguar - Land Rover?

2013 evoque, 50k miles. Turbo needs to be replaced, gate stopped working, wheel bearings are going, battery died, under powered in general. This thing is garbage.
