Physics on Khan Academy: Physics is the study of the basic principles that govern the physical world around us. We'll start by looking at motion itself. Then, we'll learn about forces, momentum, energy, and other concepts in lots of different physical situations. To get the most out of physics, you'll need a solid understanding of algebra and a basic understanding of trigonometry.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

It's called L because whenever you do angular momentum you take that L

L stands for "lomentum", just like in electronics where L stands for "linductance". Also J stands for Jinertia and b stands for "briction" in mechanics. I was told as a young student that these variable names were chosen to avoid "confusion".  Actually it is arbitrary. What could you use? If you used alpha, it would be confused with linear acceleration. Just like in the case of the L being used for inductor in electronics. You can't use "I" because for some reason that stands for iurrent (current). I guess they couldn't use "c" because that stands for capacitance -also centigrade and coulombs. What a mess.

I like how this video's pace is very relaxed, not so serious. Reminds me of Sal's older videos. Better quality + This pace = Thumbs up!

Perhaps "L" is used because it visually looks like an angle?

Good explanation. Setting speed to 1.5x helped me concentrate better.

L, from the arc described by one's hand when bending the elbow? EXCELLENT video! It's always bugged me that this stuff isn't explained in a straightforward manner.

Love the color-coding! Well done sir. I'm subscribing.

This comes from the "right hand rule" of vector cross products. The vector for the radius, r-> and the vector for the translational momentum p-> when made into a cross product : r-> x p-> = L-> Since r and p are in the x-y plane, they are perpendicular to each other and form an "L" shape when made to be part of a cross product.

4:07 Could "L" just being a visual representation of a right angle? Otherwise very cool explanation.

L stands for Leonhard Euler.
most work on angular momentum was done by him .
he was a great scientist

decompyler Than's correct, L looks like <, which is the angular bracket.

What device do you use for writing so clearly? Is it a pad (iPad, Surface Pro, ...) or a board connected to a computer? Thanks.

Angular Momentum reaxhes out and grabs a hold of inertial space.

I always thought its cause it represents a 90 degree angle
