GENERAL WISE ADVICE WHEN RECOVERING FROM DISASTERS

General good advice for recovering from disasters or terrifying events include the following:

Take stock of your emotions and respect your reactions but don’t turn your emotions into big decisions or big actions.

Take care of your basic needs such as eating, sleeping, exercising, crying, laughing, earning money, taking care of daily chores.

Help others in small and large ways as is possible.

Reach out to friends and family and share the tragedy together.

Get professional assistance.

Strive to balance your feelings about the devastation with the recognition of life’s other experiences.

Turn off your thoughts, cell phone and media moments and take a break with nature, creativity, silliness and playful distractions. Take a break.

If you fear a reoccurrence of a disaster or that a frightening situation might happen to you, do consider the probability of it happening to you at all or again. Take reasonable precaution and feel prepared (Earthquake kit, travel alerts noted, avoiding the troubling person).

Fortunately, when you are suffering from fear, panic, anxiety or depression, whether chronic or suddenly, there are many, many things you can do to help yourself.
