Don't learn a language because you have too much choice on which one to learn? Those people must pass out in the grocery store! "TOO MANY CHOICES OF FOODS!"

"Reasons to be ignorant of the world". Thats what the article should really be titled

I agree with the article: something that's hard should NEVER be attempted. Going to the moon, finding solutions to world problems, curing diseases. None of them are easy therefore should be avoided at all costs.

"It might be unnessacary" (shows them the amount of money that multilinguals earn compared to monos)

Learning a language is so much fun. Personally it's never a chore to me. Once you learn a foreign language you can begin to understand and involve yourself in the culture with native speakers of your chosen language and that to me is priceless.

Now I'm totally convinced to never learn any more languages. Good thing too... they were hard!

I am an American and if it were possible for me to learn every language in the world, I would do so.

Lindsay Dow I'm back in England and I work for a large worldwide company store (two clues, usually a big blue building, the logo's in yellow). I've never been discouraged from using languages at work, in fact, my manager thinks it's a really welcoming thing to do. Especially with the customers we have being both locals and people who are either visiting from outside the UK to their family members at Newcastle's universities or living in the UK but not born here, we have a mix of people. I've worked there now for 2 weeks and I've served people from the Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Faroe Islands, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Morocco, Spain and Italy

Had a good laugh at all the bad excuses. :D Hope no one actually reads them and says " Ah well learning a language is too hard so i'll just do nothing instead"

'' Wearing a suit and not doing a commute! '' - I almost fell off my chair with laughter. Lindsay your true Brilliance !

Thank u for your video. I needed this and I think I'll have to replay it when feeling demotivated. I get those reasons not to learn a new language are lame, but still they are bothering me and made me struggle with a couple of languages I wanted to study. It's not about lazyness. Unfortunately I'm a person who thinks too much for her own good, always trying to find the right thing to do rather than the fun one. But as you're saying, I don't need a reason to do something I just enjoy and even if it doesn't bring anywhere it's still worth it. I'll try to keep this in mind. Thanks again.

Hello Lindsay!! I've just logged into YouTube for subscribing to your channel. Simply W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L. I really LOVE that you put subtitles on your videos. It helps really much for learning languages between other things (In general, I have a very BAD auditive comprehension so with your videos I try to listen you and after I check myself if I understood all... I have to... practice... more... more... Also I need time to learn languages, I had to give up French lessons because I give more priority to University's stuff... Sorry for the EXTENSIVE parenthesis).
I find your channel very interesting, I like it. I love languages, I would like be a polyglot... Already I will see how treat that point. While I am learning English and French, and I know some words in other languages (like "Geia sou" /yassú/ in Greek xD that means "hello" and "bye bye" like "Ciao" in Italian) I WANT TO LEARN GREEK... AND GO TO GREECE D:
As you can see, perhaps you are thinking that I'm a bit mad... T_T I'm not... OK, a bit... a little bit... a little much... If you have read all my coment: CONGRATS TO ARRIVE UNTIL HERE! xD
[Now Spanish version, my mother tongue || Ahora versión española, mi lengua materna] P.S. You can check my mistakes in English if you want to xD.
Comentario adicional: Well, in fact, currently I'm not learning English... since two years ago (?) maybe? All what I wrote it's what I still know. I hope not forget what I already know T_T, like in French... J'ai oublié quelque choses et je commettre TROP des erreurs... Quelle triste.
I make many mistakes too when I'm thinking something in Spanish and I try to express it in another language, like proverbs and all that stuff.

¡¡Hola Lindsay!!
QUIERO APRENDER GRIEGO... E IR A GRECIA D:
Como puedes ver, quizás pienses que estoy un poco loco... T_T No lo estoy... OK, un poquito... un poquito poco... un poco mucho... Si has leído todo mi comentario: ¡ENHORABUENA POR LLEGAR HASTA AQUÍ! xD

What MIGHT not be useful (or in your best interests):
Watching 4 hr of reality TV every day.
Playing video games..
Watching sports.
Learning a new musical instrument.
Going to parties or bars.

Where are the people speaking out against these wasted expenditures of time?

What might not be useful is spending your 90 years seeking to be constantly entertained at the expense of any personal improvement/development whether it be intellectually, artistically, physically, spiritually, culturally, professionally or otherwise.

P.S. I do watch occasional TV, can play the guitar, and am a baseball fan-you gotta give your brain a break sometimes; but these days I prioritize my intellectual and linguistic development.

To be honest...outside the English-speaking world...students/young people regard English as the "holy grail" of language learning.  But this is more for job-reasons rather than love of language learning

All of the reasons they give for not learning foreign languages are COMPLETE rubbish! I totally agree with you Lindsay!

Do you know any constructed languages like Esperanto?

My story is that I tried learning language multiple times I only ever found Spanish to be the most useful but only in work situations. The reason for this is because my workplace is always speaking Spanish but a good amount of them don’t speak English. So, we both figure out ways to teach each other different languages while working. At the end of the day no matter what I highly respect language learners and people who teach languages, but at the end of the day I identify as a monolingual.

As a foreign language instructor 👨‍🏫 I have to say that languages enhances expression, and increasing unity in our world. Good work on helping people learn a new language.

If 7000 languages is too many for someone to choose consiously, here's what to do: pin all of them up on a dartboard and take your shot. Whatever it lands on, learn it. Unless it's something that you probably can't learn like Mapia for the sheer fact that no one speaks it. But Frisian is still thriving relatively. Just learn that.
