Did Chinese Swimmers Dope Before Tokyo Olympics?

Last month, the New York Times broke a story about nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers who had tested positive for a banned substance months before the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) believed China’s claims that the swimmers had inadvertently consumed the drug, and the swimmers went on to compete. But there are still a lot of unanswered questions as some of those swimmers are also headed to the Paris Olympics. For example, China paid WADA $2 million above its yearly requirements around the same time…and not every WADA scientist was convinced of the scientific feasibility of China’s claims…

If the implication is that any country donating to WADA can be accused of potentially bribing the anti-doping organisation for 'special treatment', then the more a country contributes to WADA the more suspicious it is committing some wrongdoing?? In 2023, US contributed USD 3.4 million to WADA as compared to USD 0.7 by China, and does this mean US was almost 5x more guileful than China then? By the way, China's extra contribution of USD2 m was made during 2 fiscal years of 2018 and 2019 and not during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The devil is always in the details (and here the omitted information as well).

Perhaps the most important piece of information is missing here. Against incontestible evidence, the doping allegation in 2021 was cleared by WADA, the Olympic Authority as well as domestic Chinese authorities. Since then, the 23 athletes have not tested positive for any banned drugs and they continued to show stellar performance in international events (like the World Aquatics Championship and Asian Games). A good example is Zhang YuFei. DMZ is a common animal drug to treat infections in livestock. It is also used as feed additive to promote growth and improve feed efficiency in poultry and pigs.

The Chinese athletes are subjected to a vigorous very drug testing treatment, somewhat 3-5 times more than their western counterparts in the Paris Olympic. My bet is that they will perform well and even if they win any medals this time round, people still say this is unfair because they were cleared of any doping allegations 3 years back.
