Thank you for clearing up so many questions I had about Der Ling. When I first read her book in the late 90's I was fascinated that this self described princess wasn't mentioned in any of the history books on the Qing dynasty. I would say getting kicked out of the palace was light punishment for her offense.

You are right. You do know information about Der Ling that I didn't know before this. This new information is very shocking to me. Thank you for this video. I also did not know that Empress Dowager Cixi had a car before this.

What do the ladies-in-waiting do after the ceremonies are over? Are they staff of the Forbidden City or are they noblewomen from Beijing?

I saw a video of her speaking. She has that transatlantic accent you hear in newsreels shown in theaters from the 20's to 40's in the US.

So many scammers back then you could be anyone..

Der Ling was called out for many of her lies in her lifetime. You did manage to have new info that I wasn't aware of.

Can you imagine stealing from Cixi??!! This woman was bold.😬

I was looking forward to this video as one of my grandfather‘s books was by Der Ling. (I’ve stripped her of the title.) I was pretty young at the time and fascinated but with no ability to “fact check”. However, to this day I remember the “Well” and Cixi ordering the death of the Pearl Concubine.
The photos in this video are marvelous. I like the one of Der Ling amongst the flowers looking like the cat who ate the canary! That must have been taken right after she swiped all the money from the artist.
Now I’m reading “Empress CiXi” by Jung Chang.

Everything about Der Ling, as I found when researching her for my 2008 book 'Imperial Masquerade: The Legend of Princess Der Ling', is fraught with hyperbole, rumour, self-promotion, and so on. It was an atmosphere she throve in. Toward the end of her life, in the California of the 1930s up to her death in 1944, Der Ling (Mrs Elizabeth White) turned from all her stories about the palace and Cixi to working on behalf of the Chinese nation and people, raising funds and awareness for the cause after the Japanese invasion. In the book, I suggest she was growing out of her self-promotional phase and becoming a Chinese patriot. I also suggest that had she lived to be older (she was not 60 when she died), she might have had some interesting insights re: politics in post-WWII China. Her sister was a fascinating individual as well but far less attracted to self-promotion. I know members of her family, who loved her, and I own an embroidered silk panel she designed dating from the 1920s. When the eunuchs were kicked out of the Forbidden City, Mme Dan took them in to her home in Beijing and to help them support themselves she sold products made by artisan trained eunuchs to foreign visitors in Beijing. This panel was a gift to such a foreign couple for their wedding in 1936 and bears Mme Dan's name and title (Rong Ling Shou Shan).

Maybe she uses the princess title in order to sell more books. What was the title she used in Chinese ? 公主?

I saw that too but I just think the article of the vdo just need some attention by use wording like 'princess' to fascinate us for more involved. I didn't think that woman was a real princess at all Hahaha 😂

I thought that only Der Ling's sister had an affair with Guangxu and that he even tried to persuade her into becoming one of his concubines, but she refused.
