As a tennis coach, watching this video was embarrassing because I should have known this. I've been under the same mindset that my instructors told me which was you need to be split stepping on the service line at the very least.

I didn't fully believe you at first because of my ingrained biases, but I watched some Sampras videos in slow motion and it is the exact same thing. He is split stepping way before the service line near the middle of no man's land.

Thank you for the video. Really humbled me and I'm upset I didn't consider this until now.

Doh. Never knew this serve-and-volley basic. No longer agile enough for S/V. When younger, I was always mishitting the ball because I was still moving forward. Wouldn't have ever known where to learn this back in the day.
Thanks for these precious gems.

To be effective the split step must happen before your opponent hit their return. The purpose of the split step is to allow you to adjust your froward movement and move towards the direction of the return. This all happens rapidly. Having great footwork the utilizes a proper count position is key to serve and volley. Some of the best serve and volley guys I played against were not tall with booming serves. They were like 5’ 9” accurate servers with very fast feet that were constantly in the right place to volley. When I coached I always ran multiple ball drills to teach the split step. Also practice hitting half volley and volley from behind the service line then moving forward for net ball using split step. You got to do the drills to build the skills,

Thank you for this. I am too often guilty of rushing forward exactly as you describe with poor results.

Thanks, Ryan! Do you think Gulbis hit his volley to the right location? He hit it cross court instead of hitting down the line -- just wondering if it was the best choice for that situation.

Please watch Stephan Edberg. He used his kick serve 98% of the time.

Do not buy "Fuzzy Yellow Balls." It's a cartoon of the most obvious points imaginable, such as determine if your opponent's backhand is weak and then hit it there. It's a waste of money. You are welcome.
