The Japanese Navy is getting a face lift with the conversion of the Izumo-class destroyers into small supercarriers capable of holding F-35s (compliments of the US).

As a German born American married to a Japanese born American, it makes me endlessly happy that we are in this together this time!

I've lived in Japan for 20 years. The national ethos here values peace / harmony above all else. Japan would have been happy to continue as a pacifist lightweight indefinitely. China forced its hand.

And don’t forget North Korea. There is more than one reason for Japan to stop being so passive.

Three of my uncles were pilots in the imperial Japanese Navy. One was a fighter, pilot, and the other two were kamikaze pilots. My great grandfather immigrated to the United States in 1891. My aunt and several uncles were US Army intelligence officers. World War II was very interesting for all of us. Good to have the Japanese as allies and friends. As enemies, however….

They need to rebuild the Yamato as a space battleship.

I can tell you that there is no tighter alliance than the US Navy and JMSDF. I served a few years as part of US Naval Forces Japan and I know that there will be no hesitation by the JMSDF to have the US Navy's back in the region. They are a huge force multiplier for us. Secondly I assume these will be the F-35B VTOL variants as the helicopter destroyers do not have catapults. This makes them like our Amphibious Readiness Groups with the USMC and USN.

It took us dropping two stars to contain the Hellcat that is Japanese Warrior Culture... it's been a few decades and now that Hellcat is one of our best friends. Fucking mercy be on whoever makes the mistake of picking a fight with either of us now that we are actively working in unison.

No one really looks at maps until geopolitics happen. Never realized that Okinawa is closer to Taiwan than the Japanese mainland. And, Taketomi Island is only 300km from Taiwan.

Peter The JS Kaga is not going to carry the carrier version of the f35.
It will be carrying the f35b which is the short take of version.
The carrier version of the f35 (C) requires a catapult and arrest wires to launch and land, and the JS kaga is too small to fit those so only the f35B will be used.

The Kaga is back boys! How long until we get the Hiryu, Soryu, and Akagi to bring the old gang back?

The Japanese have been slowly rearming since Shinzo Abe (RIP). I think the Senkaku incident and the PLAN's rapid growth convinced the Japanese they couldn't just wait around anymore.

The world's first fleet carriers were the USS Lexington and Yorktown.

The Japanese carriers came a bit later.
