My favorite part of the level design is the bonfire in front of the Grand Archives. That’s literally in sight of the Dragonslayer Armour bonfire

I think it's supposed to show that the painter girl was locked in but it looks pretty stupid in general gameplay

The painter girl can’t escape, that’s the point.

I’m pretty sure that’s for the lore, since the girl waiting in the room was trapped and waiting for Gael to come open the door and allow her to begin painting a new world. So they wanted to keep the door locked but also not have to build a whole grand run through just to open the door.

Ds1 level design was unmatched by later versions, everything connected in a spiderweb of pathing that was beautiful in its own right

You do have to find a key in a completely different area first. So this is actually a returning shortcut which makes sense

Since no one else is saying it, I will. That door exists solely because of the elevator short cut so you can get to the woods faster if you die. And an argument can be made if the door should even be there, and that’s fine, but that’s the reason it is.

I always interpreted this door as more of a storytelling device that's meant to convey the idea that the painter has been locked away to keep her from creating a new painting.

Let’s not forget about Harvest Valley, being a windmill at the top of a mountain going past the clouds, somehow ends up with us going up and elevator into a castle in a volcano of all things.

Its there so you feel your hope leave your body before realizing the bonfire is right there

Unless you open the door you cant go back in the building to get to the elevator and short cut unless you go back to the first bonfire of the area

In Metyr's OST, in the second phase, it sounds like the recording of a black hole, but at one point, we can hear a part of the first phase through the black hole's static.

To me, Metyr's messages and attempts at communication are going through, but there is no one to receive it, reinforcing the fact that the Greater Will just left.
