iPhone 16 Pro: Here's What I Learned After a Month

I tested the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max for the past month. They are both impressive even without their marque feature: Apple Intelligence. I've had more time with them to test the batteries, the A17 Pro chip, Camera Control button and iOS 18. Here's what I learned.

The iPhone 16 Pro's display has a minimum brightness of 1 nit, not 1 Hz. Clearly we've been working Patrick too much and broke his brain -- hence he said the wrong thing.

Come on, dude attention to detail was seemingly not present in this video. It has the A18 Pro not the A17 Pro. And the screen gets down to one nit of brightness, not one hz. You’re getting the phone and the watch mixed up. I appreciate these videos, but large tech channels like this should pay a little bit more attention to these details.

You know what I’ve learned? Coming from a 13 pro and recently getting a 16 pro max…the camera control button sucks for three reasons. 1) it makes the phone move when you put it all the way down 2) it’s too far from the bottom corner for a natural feel and 3) when orienting the phone in my hand with a case on it, the shutter button cutout feels like the mute switch cutout of yore and I’m constantly picking it up upside down.

The fact that the summary is that you need a 12 series to see a notable improvement by upgrading, kind of says it all. (12 Pro user that still doesn’t feel the need to upgrade)

I went from a 14 pro max to a 16 pro max. The speakers on the 14 pro max were much louder and had better sound imo. Other wise I’m happy with 16 pro max.

16 Pro Max is fantastic. Great battery life, better thermal (also WiFi and 5G) performance, 1 hz display is very useful, Audio Mix is phenomenal and the Camera Control is good, for right now. It will get much better with two stage shutter, some tweaks and Visual Intelligence, which is now in beta on iOS 18.2 I recommend adjusting additional settings for CC button in Accessibility Settings.

The camera and photographic styles are my favorite features on my iPhone 16 Pro Max coming from an iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Don't laugh, but I just upgraded from the iPhone 6s Plus. After watching many reviews, I was surprised that no one talked about the actual phone usage - you know, dropped calls, speakers, etc. I was reminded that Gen Z thinks it's rude to call, and mainly texts ;--) This said, you did mention the quality of the sound / voice coming from the speakers (many others did in the "video" features of the iPhone. My Mom's hearing has been challenging. Now that I switched to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the microphones must be pretty rad as well because she can now hear everything in our conversation. That's a huge improvement - and as silly as this sounds - makes purchase of the phone worth it. The cameras, while "cool", are not something I've needed just yet - as I use larger sensor cameras for most of my photography. The faster refresh rate, face detection to open apps, etc is also a game changer from where I was upgrading. This phone feels generations better than the iPhone 6s Plus - as it should.

What’s your sense on the 16 Pro Max size? I have the 13 pro max and it feels heavy and too big to handle - especially one handed.

I’m not a fan of the phone sticking when I swipe and the brightness. It’s very dull.

I paid off my 14 pro which totaled 520 dollars or so just to get the 16 pro and I’m very disappointed with the camera button. Cases can’t figure out how to work around it and where the button is located is very awkward to use.
