Lets change our Mercedes Benz spark plug and ignition wires because we all want to maximize performance and get the most power out of our Mercedes engines. None of us want to burn more fuel than we have to, or keep visiting the SMOG check station because your car won’t pass.
By changing your spark plugs and wires you can increase the service life of your engine, get great reliability, lower fuel consumption and reduce exhaust emissions for your vehicle.
Your engine will benefit from new wires in lots a ways. This means maximum voltage to your spark plugs, longer spark times resulting in optimum engine performance and better MPG ( Miles Per Gallon). Less chance for misfires. Better emissions, meaning more chances to pass a SMOG check.
Did you know that the Mercedes Benz S500 W220 takes 16 spark plugs? That’s two spark plugs per cylinder! When Mercedes Benz was designing the S500 engine, they were focusing on maximizing engine performance and efficiency. The engine in the Mercedes Benz S500 W220 is a 5.0 liter V8. If you ask anyone that knows about engines if it’s fuel efficient they would tell you that it’s not. However, that is not the case with the Mercedes Benz S Class. With a proper running engine, the Mercedes Benz S500 W220 can get great gas mileage. One of the ways to get the most out of your engine is to change/replace your spark plugs and wires and regular service times. This will make sure that you are getting the most reliability out of your engine. Which means you can get to where you need to go whether it’s to the local grocery store, or a 3,000 mile road trip across the country. In this video I will show you how to change/replace out the Spark plugs and Spark plug wires on your Mercedes Benz S500 W200.

*** Gap spark plugs to 0.8mm (0.031 inches)
Spark Plug Torque: 28 Nm
Spark Plug Gap: .8mm (Out of the box is .040 inches)
A word on gapping spark plugs:

"As a rule, a properly gapped spark plug will burn hot without being too wide at high rpm to cause a misfire. Ironically, the car manufacturer's recommended spark plug gap is not optimal! The recommended spark plug gap is designed to be adequate for cold starting and smooth driving on a car that is in need of an engine tune up. If you drive your car normally and tune the engine regularly, you can increase the spark plug gap by about 0.010" for better performance and better fuel economy. However, if you drive at full throttle most of the time, you should reduce the gap by about 0.010" for better performance. The spark plug itself, and the residue that forms on it, would indicate whether the gap is too big or too small. A light brownish discoloration of the tip of to porcelain insulator indicates the proper operation of the spark plugs with the gap being ideal or close to ideal for the most recent engine speeds."

This is the best video on how to change the plugs on your W220. My only advice would be to NOT use any die-electric grease no matter what anyone says. It will save you trouble in the long run.

Your video is very good and thorough and highly detail. I plan to fix up my mom 2001 S500 hand me down that needs tons of work, from gasket to plugs and air matic shocks. I rode this Mercedes when I was young now it's time to pay back.

Mercedes shop manual for older cars says use compressed air to blow any dirt away from the top of the spark plugs before removal, in order to keep it out of the engine and plug threads. Begin threading the new plugs by hand to avoid cross-threading the plug. For convenience, I would replace the spark plugs before re-installing the coil packs and new wires. Probably also a good time to check for leaks in the valve cover gaskets and replace them if necessary.

Hey everyone! Spring time is here and summer is right around the corner! So, if you have any long trips planned, then now is a good time to upgrade your ignition system with new spark plugs and wires! Let me know how this upgrade has improved the power, performance, efficiency, and MPG in your Mercedes S Class. Cheers!

Outstanding and completely detail oriented work. I just don't understand why you are compelled to number 1-4 backwards??? It causes confusion in an almost perfect demonstration. However, overall, I'm extremely grateful for your help brother. Salute.

I don't understand why the Mercedes Benz made this simple process as gruesome and difficult which is very easy and simple if they mark each coil in numerical order which go to either "A" or "B" spark plug. I have 2004 Mercedes Benz C240 and just plug the shortage cable to the top spark plug housing and the long one to the bottom housing and so far I have no miss fire and no problem at all.

You should blow compressed air around the spark plugs before removing them. Dirt may fall into engine, not good!
