Awesome video. While I prefer to avoid anti-seize on spark plugs I do use a bit of engine oil on the threads.

Excellent and proper step-by-step method for this basic maintenance job. It's a really good idea to inspect and blow out any debris inside the well after pulling the SP wires and BEFORE removing the plug!

Charles, I keep a short length of stiff 3/8" ID Fuel line handy when replacing plugs. As soon as I break the threads loose, I shove the hose (which is stiff) over the plug porcelain, and spin it out by hand. The hose holds tight and lifts the plug out without dropping it better than a spark plug socket. Also when installing new ones, the hose flexes enough to really allow you to start the new plug easily in awkward spaces, and won't allow you to cross-thread them, since the hose will slip on the porcelain before that can happen. I just wing it in there by hand, rotating the hose until it bottoms, final torque with wrench. Done.

Great thanks . if you don't have a torque wrench, there's always a good rule of thumb : flat seat 1/4 round after hand torque, cone seat 1/8 round.

I appreciate that you actually show down in the well, the others videos I've watched do not. I like to know what things should look like. I am confident that I can do this on my '09 GTI with coils. Thanks!

I was taught to hand thread spark plugs with a small hose attached to the end for the perfect hand thread.

Most cars that come into a dealer will have hot engines, under most cases, you don't get to choose to delay the job.

I usually undo the plugs by hand after I crack it loose.
If its difficult, its usually carbon buildup and the next set of plugs won't go in easy by hand.
I've found it easy if you spray some brake cleaner on the new plug and try threading it in the hole by hand again a few times.

It will go in easy, if not, take it out and blast with brake cleaner and try again. I never use anti-seize and never use dielectric grease. But I do a quick visual inspection of the HT leads and the coil. Some HT leads or coils may break off after removal. Especially the ones compromised by engine oil, quote valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals if its separate.

A road test should be done after new plugs are fitted to check for misfires.

Awesome video. You are so good at explaining things. I'm a real sucker for repair videos, and hope you will do some more of that. Greetings from Norway.

I miss my plastic VR6 spark plug tool... Don't know where it went! A little tip with that tool though: When you're installing the plug wires, wiggle the plug wire down over the plug, then turn the tool around and use the "handle" end of it against the plug wire. The plastic is thicker on that end, with a narrower profile and a tapered edge, so it doesn't spread over the plug wire end. :D

Always use anti-seize... copper, aluminum or nickle depending upon block. Just a small amount. NGK started the myth with a TB on how you could over "tighten" a plug and their product didn't need it because they were nickel/zinc plated already. Manufactures are no better and could give a rip about spark plug removal (ie. Ford Triton)

What is the proper way to remove oil from the spark plug well? My valve
gasket was broken and some oil accumulated in the wells. In one film
they said you can't remove those spark plugs since the oil will go
somewhere where it is not supposed to be.

i accidentally ran the wrong NGK spark plugs on my 2001 VR6 gti, I bought the two prong NGKR though, about to install them this weekend .

Hey! When torqueing the spark plugs I always hold/support the head of the torque wrench so it does not bend. When You put the pressure (torque) only on the end of the wrench it creates a lever that is not only twisting but also bending. I learned it the hard way when one of the spark plugs cracked because of that. I hope it's clear... English is not my native language. :)
