🎦 ABOUT THIS VIDEO

How is the recovery after a bypass surgery . When can I get back to my activities?
Dr. Shanthala Prabhu, Senior Cardiac Surgeon, Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, KIMS Hospital, Trivandrum.

After the bypass surgery for the first four to five days patient has to be in the hospital, usually by sixth or seventh day majority of the patients will go home.
Once the patient is at home for the first one or two weeks patient will have to be very careful because we have to avoid infection so one thing that we advise to all the patients is that avoid lots of visitors.
Well it is in Indian context it is very difficult to avoid visitors but even then as far as possible avoid lots of visitors because want to have any infection either in the wound or in the lungs.
Now, first two weeks in the house do whatever you were doing when you are in the hospital that is not doing anything strenuous but patient can have bath on his own there is no need for a helper to give him a bath etc. There is no restriction on talking or using mobile phones after the first two weeks patient can walk outside his house for about 30 to 40 minutes every day initially it may not be possible for a person to walk for 30 minutes at a stretch it doesn't matter you can start with 10 to 15 minutes gradually increase to 30 to 40 minutes every day. After first month patient can go to the his office work and if the patient person is involved in heavy strenuous activity then we ask them to take things slightly slowly. One has to avoid driving for about two months and any strenuous activity can be undertaken after three months.
If a person likes sports very much activities like swimming activities like tennis or badminton or squash this can be undertaken after three months.

Every patient is different. My husband could NOT just get up and bathe himself. He had to be assisted in many things, such as eating and going to the bathroom. He was a very spry 73 year old and this 5 bypass whipped him badly we are now 5 weeks out from surgery and he has good days and bad days. He still is not able to bathe himself or use the bathroom by himself. This surgery is NO walk in the park either for the patient or the spouse. It is hard as heck. You can only understand this if you have been in this particular situation.
