If you have weak forearms, you should grip the bar strongly, using that hook grip can fuck up your elbows, (golfer elbow)

For the second recommendation. How hard you grip does not impact how that back muscles react. As long as the motion is the same between grips back engagement is the same.

When you hold the bar too hard, you don't over-use forearms and less target the back. The back is utulized the same, but you also train the forearms, so hold the bar hard

I am just doing barbell bent over rows 3 times per week 5 x 20 and I'm developing a back like a monster. Remeber guys, barbell bent over row is the only back exercise you need.

About hard griping, i usually use it to force some last reps, maxximize your RPE

Gripping the bar harder allows you to lift more weight and put more of an overload on the muscle. The light grip method only allows for maybe 60% of your potential pull and wouldn’t be that good unless you’re just going for a full shred rather than any sort of mass/muscle gain. Having forearm involvement in a pull using your arms is fine as long as the pull itself is focusing the tension through the lats
