How Long Can My Car Sit Without Being Driven?
Many of us have started working from home and many of our children are doing their classes and schooling online at home as well. So that poses a question, what happens to my car if it sits too much?
When a car sits for long periods of times, there’s two primary things we are concerned about. Number one is the battery, you see we have quite a few computers on board every car now, and all those computers have a memory that they have to retain. In order to keep that memory alive, they draw a little bit from the battery all the time. So its wise for us every couple of weeks to have the car running so that way the alternator helps keep that battery charged up.
My second concern is the tires. Tires are rubber and rubber eventually rots away. Now the thing that accelerates that rot the most is ozone. Now our tires naturally have a chemical in them that protects against those ozones, but the interesting thing about that chemical is that is oozes out of the rubber as our tires roll down the road and bounce. As the rubber in the tire flexes and pushes some of that chemical protection out. So having our tires driving around regularly also helps extend their life.
So my recommendation is, every couple of weeks, take your car out for a spin. Just a short 10-20 minute drive! That should help keep your car in good shape, even when you aren’t driving it as much. I hope this video has been informational to you. Until next time, safe travels and blessings to you.
