Diagnosing ADHD

Rates of diagnosing ADHD, and prescribing stimulants are increasing. At the same time, we are still missing many cases of adult ADHD, particularly inattentive type, in women, and among the elderly. Is diagnosing ADHD really that difficult?

Is there more to diagnosing ADHD than running through the checklist of 9 inattentive and 9 impulsive/hyperactive symptoms? What are the conditions that can be confused with ADHD? Are there any ways to detect when someone is faking ADHD? Is it really impossible to perform a valid evaluation via telehealth sessions?

What you said about dementia is so true. My grandmother had a surgery and had a stroke as a complication. After a day or two they said she had a week to live. After a week they said she had a month to live and moved her to hospice. After a month in hospice they diagnosed her with dementia and said she’d need to be in assisted living with 24-7 nursing care for the rest of her life. After another month they sent her home instead, with my mom but said she needed constant supervision because she had dementia. By then, we were all like no this has nothing to do with the stroke or dementia. she’s been this way since as long as we can remember (in my case since the early 80s). She did die a few years later, basically cardiac arrest and multiple organ failure, and she was pretty much lucid to the end.

Hi Doc, ja, I have adhd symptoms spelled out on my grade 1, 2 and 3 reports (inattentive type) so I definitely have adhd😅. What effect does Adhd have on NMDA receptors? Is hyperfixation more a feature of Adhd or of Aspergers/ASD? Can hyperfixation look like a bipolar or psychotic disorder? Can Adhd medication exaggerate symptoms for a period after cessation?
My wife has Adhd and the Pivot pause thing is true, we both guilty of misunderstanding each other, intruding and going off on tangents that ruin the progress. I'm trying to learn that my opinion is not as important as I think unless it's asked for. I also do it while talking to customers in my job. It always ends with "anyways... what I'm trying to say is..." or I miss the point of the call and end up responding to information that is irrelevant. Imagine the long conversations between two people that do this?
