To anyone who thinks both parties make profit the person who bought the $40 for 30$ actually lost 10 dollars in profit while the man who recieved 30$ made 10$ in profit. You’re welcome.

The easiest way to explain this is if someone is profiting 10, someone has to be losing 10.

I did the math in my head AND on paper and this was what I came up with. I’ve just been trying to figure out why I was wrong. Now I’m glad to know that I wasn’t wrong… lol

Break the numbers into 10’s and remember you have 50 invested opposed to their 20 invested if you don’t understand it. Hope this helps!

Guy 1 started out with $50. Guy 2 started out with $20. Guy 1 ends with $40. Guy 2 ends with $30. Guy 1 lost $10 Guy 2 gained $10. Hope this helps.

The person performing the trick is essentially giving away 10 dollars of their money to the second person

you put 20, buy for 30, lose 50. you gain 40. 50-40=10. you still lost 10 dollars and the other person gained 10

Real question is... Why would you do this to yourself? You lose $10...???

You can make it easier.
You start with $50
You throw down $20
Buy back the $20 for $30
You lost $10

Where the trick gets you is in how it is presented. We automatically assume that the whole of money is the sum. It isn't, there are two sums being totaled. So, if you only focus on Person One's total. You'll see that he loses ten dollars. Vice versa, Person Two gains ten. The equations look like this.

Person One: 20 - 30 + 40 = 30. -- Person One lost 10 dollars.
Person Two: 20 + 30 = 50. -- Person Two gained ten dollars.

I have been telling people that person number has actually lost $10 from the first time I saw this. And no one seemed to understand. I am glad someone else noticed that.

“They both only have $20, so he buys the other $20 for $30. “

Dude....I had to YouTube this shit I've seen it tons of times and would try to break it down it my head and would get as far as the first guy spending a total of 50 and id just lose it for some reason....I literally understood half way into your first explanation....thank you!!

The obvious part is the $30.00 showing up after the two twenties were on the table. 20+30=50 Nobody had 50 bucks left, therefore the one with the 50 bucks (who now has only $40 for their efforts) just lost 10 bucks. It was a darn good deal for the other one though: 50% profit in seconds.

I saw the original meme of two guys doing it and thought nothing of it until one day remembered that video and forgot how they did it and I spent an hour trying to find the video and trying to find a method but to no avail. But now after many months of trying to find the video I found this. Thank you. I told my friend that I’d wanna try this with him if I found the video but thank god I found yours instead because otherwise I’d be $10 short and be too dumb to realise 🤦‍♂️
