They made an effort to increase education and highly praised engineering, mathematics etc. It was drilled into children's heads from an early age. That in order to succeed they had to learn science. That was what the country needed. Now that everyone is living in proverbial gravy. You get people studying fine arts, just because they don't know what to do with their lives. They do gender studies, even met a girl that did her masters at a very prestigious school, studying African dancing. Specifically the Kalimba. She could not even play the bloody thing. She did make a decent waitress years later, when I saw her last.

You can also add military ordnance to their engineering prowess.

Germany had a nuclear program but it was heroically sabotaged by Heisenberg who kept them going in wrong directions until the end of the war. Now THAT would make a great movie!

I think the Vergeltungswaffe 2 program wasn't in Berlin but on the Island Usedom in Peenemünde.
I stopped there when i was on my way to Poland.
My Great-Granduncle worked at Krupp Stahl (not 100% sure, dont know a lot about him) which was founded in 1811 and also played a big in WW2. They exist to this day

There’s a great book called “bomb” and it shows just how close other countries like Germany and Russia got to nuclear weapons.

Pride in the work of engineering. Not just shortcut to payday. It's a cultural issue.

Because after WW2 japan and germany were not allowed to spend more than 1% GDP on their military, so they invested in commercial technology
