Tech Check: Upgrade your Apple CarPlay, iOS 13 update, EVERYTHING you need to know

Apple has a big update coming to its devices later this fall, called iOS 13. Perhaps the most interesting part of it isn't actually on the iPhone -- it's on your car's infotainment screen. This is going to be a major upgrade to CarPlay, so let's walk through some of the changes.

iOS 13 is bringing a lot of updates to Apple CapPlay. Which of these new features are you most looking forward to?

Do you have to update the car in anyway when a new IOS version of feature comes out? Or just update the phone and the car gets everything intended?

A couple of other details you left out about CarPlay for iOS 13. If a passenger uses your iPhone while driving, any interaction with the phone won't interfere with what's on your car's display. So if I had Waze running and my wife wanted to look something up in Safari, Waze will remain on my car's display. This is huge for me. I've also read that Apple will add second display support. So in cars that have that 4 to 7 inch display between the tach and speedo, it can show navigation instructions on that secondary display. I wish GM would update my 2018 Silverado to support that, but I doubt they will.

Why there is no way to navigate the list of songs directly from music interface ?

Don't like that you skipped over Messages. Has there been changes? That's probably my biggest pet peeve with CarPlay. I don't need Siri to ask me if I want it to read me my new messages (too distracting!), I just want to quickly tap on any new messages and see at a glance whether it's just an emoji or a short question that I can answer with a simple yes or no.



CarPlay is useful but it has a long way to go to be truly fluid.

1:08 or just use the dedicated siri/voice command button on the steering wheel problem solved, that's what i do now on my 2019 Leaf. i'm pretty sure several others have a dedicated button some years ago.

Every update is just more forcing of junk Apple apps. Tap an address in my calendar to navigate? Super useful...until you realize it has to come from Calendar, which usually requires you to input the address of your appointment manually due to its limited data about the real world. And then it only goes to Apple Maps which I’m sorry in parts of the country other than Cali or NYC is still wrong 20% of the time.

You can already use siri to navigate using 3rd party apps in iOS 12 carplay.

Apple needs to give up on Siri. When has anyone in the history of driving ever wanted to see their calendar on their infotainment screen. There’s a reason no one does it. Music, nav. All we need.

“It won’t cost you a dime..., ” thanks for giving Apple the idea to charge for their updates. I am sure that’s the new feature in iOS 14.
