They use spectroscopy to check the corresponding wavelengths of the elements present in the spectra of light. We have extensive data on all the signatures of the elements through experimental testing so when the same is found in the spectra of a star we can say that it's contains that particular element.

Good point. The only problem is, it takes millions of years for the light from a supernova to reach earth. So what we know about supernovas is “old news.” And some of stars we see through a telescope no longer exist.

I defend Rosie Franklin who was ridiculed by Watson and Crick for thinking the double helix may be one right and one lefthanded strand because her crystallograph showed the two strands crossed and were not parallel. They only cross in perspective of a two dimensional drawing like a twisted ladder looks . A right and lefthanded double helix looks like the Ashoke Senn "two winding".
