Dave tests out his newly installed 8M/8M symmetrical VDSL2 internet connection in the EEVblog lab.
And rants about how the Australian NBN is not in any major business parks.
And for those that don't believe that Telstra charge $8000/month for 10M/10M business Ethernet connection, here you go:

If you ever get a chance, it might be cool to put the DSL up on a scope so folks can see the modulation and spectrum.  I did it with my cheapo RTL SDR dongle and you could easily see the different channels, and upstream (being transmitted locally) was way brighter than downstream.

maybe it's so hard to get a proper internet connection down under because so up side down all the electrons are falling out

Awesome! More videos! I have learned SO much from your videos. Especially from your tear downs where you identify components and explain what they do. I have even replaced chips on my laptop mobo and fixed it, your videos gave me confidence. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us Dave!

Hi Dave,
If you use Chrome or Firefox frequently I would highly recommend installing adblock. It does a really good job blocking all those annoying ads that pop up all over the place. I've used it for several years now and have no complaints whatsoever!

At least they have given you a router with proper antennas on!

Noticed an error Dave; you get 8Mbps (Megabits) not 8MBps (Megabytes). Your upload speed in Megabytes is 1MB per second. Transfer rates are normally talked about in bits per second and not bytes per second.

Congratulations! I'm really happy for you. I remember the moment, right after I moved in to study here and the cable guy connected us up, I was on this speedtest page on the TV via my HTPC, clicked the start button and the needle shot to the right. Manly tears were shed. Germany has some pretty horrific issues with internet connection as well, but (sorry, don't mean to brag or anything) on other scales than you seem to have... A friend of mine has 280kb/s downspeed, 7ms ping just because of the infrastructure (more village than city)...

Excellent Dave. Being from Africa, I can really empathise with your elation.
Now, living in London though, we have gradually been upgraded over the years at no extra cost from our original 512Kb x 256Kb link in 2001 to a ***Mb x**Mb (at a reduced cost as we are "loyal customers").
I am still fascinated as to how it all fits down an RG59.

I do feel sorry for you with regards to connection speeds. Here in the UK, I was on dial up from 1999 till 2005 when we was able to get 1mb ADSL, then 2mb soon after and then 2 years later 8mb but all only had a 448K upload! Terrible! I know have VDSL2 80/20 and its fantastic. The upload alone enables one to do so much more. I feel your joy as I only had my VDSL installed a few weeks back and still keep giggling like a little girl at how fast it is. xD

EEVblog good to see you got better internet - saw your thread over on whirlpool :) By the way, fibre NBN is fully capable of providing close to 100Mbps down and 40Mbps up - there is virtually no contention until you hit your ISPs network. Unless of course you were referring to the MTM (malcom turnbulls mess/fibre to the node) :)
PS the video should have taken 1 min, which it did

Congrats on the 8/8 and even better when you get the 20/20! Checking your speed using Speedtest.net isn't ideal now days. I did a big blog post before showing how many ISPs are actually using their traffic shaping rules to boost the speed for speedtest.net servers. Plus the fact that the default selected server is a local one which is probably only a couple of hops away, so of course you're going to get perfect speeds. Many content delivery networks (CDN) provide test upload/download facilities which would give you more accurate results, especially if you specify servers outside of your own country. Not sure what you were going on about during the youtube upload, a 54mb file is a 54mb file, regardless of any encoding/optimisation etc. Youtube processing is done after upload.

I'm not going to brag about my connection Dave, but it's tempting! Still, for you that faster upload will be heaven when uploading videos to YouTube! Enjoy!

Don't mix Mbits with MBytes. 8 bits in a Byte. Mb vs MB. Trap for new players as Dave would say. Set up a free ftp server in the lab then go home and download a 1Gb file from the lab. A much more realistic evaluation of one's speed. Thanks for all the great video Dave, all the best.
