In this short interview, Sam Witwer gives his opinion on the best order to watch Star Wars if you were introducing someone new to the franchise.

Do you agree with the order he picks? Where would you start - chronological order starting with the prequel trilogy? The clone wars series? The original trilogy or maybe even the sequel trilogy?

Let me know in the comments

Synopsis of Star Wars (courtesy of Wikipedia):

The Star Wars franchise depicts the adventures of characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" across multiple fictional eras, in which humans and many species of aliens (often humanoid) co-exist with droids, which may be programmed for personal assistance or battle. Space travel between planets is common due to lightspeed hyperspace technology. The planets range from wealthy, planet-wide cities to deserts scarcely populated by primitive tribes. Virtually any Earth biome, along with many fictional ones, has its counterpart as a Star Wars planet which, in most cases, teem with sentient and non-sentient alien life. The franchise also makes use of other astronomical objects such as asteroid fields and nebulae. Spacecraft range from small starfighters to large capital ships, such as the Star Destroyers, as well as space stations such as the moon-sized Death Stars. Telecommunication includes two-way audio and audiovisual screens, holographic projections, and hyperspace transmission.

The universe of Star Wars is generally similar to the real universe but its laws of physics are less strict allowing for more imaginative stories. One result of that is a mystical power known as the Force which is described in the original film as "an energy field created by all living things ... [that] binds the galaxy together". The field is depicted as a kind of pantheistic god. Through training and meditation, those whom "the Force is strong with" exhibit various superpowers (such as telekinesis, precognition, telepathy, and manipulation of physical energy). It is believed nothing is impossible for the Force. The mentioned powers are wielded by two major knightly orders at conflict with each other: the Jedi, peacekeepers of the Galactic Republic who act on the light side of the Force through non-attachment and arbitration, and the Sith, who use the dark side by manipulating fear and aggression. While Jedi Knights can be numerous, the Dark Lords of the Sith (or 'Darths') are intended to be limited to two: a master and their apprentice.

The franchise is set against a backdrop of galactic conflict involving republics and empires, such as the evil Galactic Empire. The Jedi and Sith prefer the use of a weapon called the lightsaber, a blade of plasma that can cut through virtually any surface and deflect energy bolts. The rest of the population, as well as renegades and soldiers, use plasma-powered blaster firearms. In the outer reaches of the galaxy, crime syndicates such as the Hutt cartel are dominant. Bounty hunters are often employed by both gangsters and governments, while illicit activities include smuggling and slavery.

The combination of science fiction and fantasy elements makes Star Wars a very universal franchise, capable of telling stories of various genres.

Do you think this modified machete order is perfect or would you go a different way?

My oldest son had an awesome moment when he was little. I’m a big fan so he grew up always seeing Star Wars but mostly bits and pieces. He knew anakin and he knew darth Vader, but never made the connection.

One time, I was watching episode 3 when he was about 6 or 7. At the end, when the helmet came down, he gasped. It finally clicked.

He makes a good point. This should be the ideal way for Star Wars to be introduced to new people so that way they don’t have any spoilers and can understand a bit of the framework of Star Wars before going into a new Hope.

That is exactly how I saw it and he is right. When I discovered that Anakin is Darth Vader i was so confused. I was also angry at him.

You cut too soon. Sam also mentioned stopping episode III before the kids are born, then showing episode VI so they get the twins' surprise. After that, I don't really remember what he said..

IT's a great idea, but there's one problem. I remember the Clone Wars hints at Anakin's fate more than a few times, really heavy handedly as well.

Maybe most kids won't put two and two together but the sharper ones definitely will. It's still a great idea though.

I love you, Sam Witwer. I hate you, Darth Maul. I’m so conflicted.

I started with my brother (he was 3 at the time) with the same film that introduced me to Star Wars, Star Wars '77, and then I watched the other 2 original Trilogy films with him and then moved on to the prequels (bar Revenge of the Sith because he's still too young)

I’m excited to show my daughter this one day. I have been trying to figure out the watch order. I might try this. Or show her Episdoe 2 and all of clone wars 4-5 then go back to 3

After all that Return of the Jedi will be much more impactful as they have the whole history behind Anakin and his eventual return to the light in self sacrifice. This will be a great send off for a character they grew along side since the first episode of the Clone Wars.

Why start with clone wars before watching episodes 1 and 2? Is there something in those two movies that I’m forgetting and would spoil the reveal?

Then completely stop there and pretend the rest didn’t happen.
