I grew up in Barbados in the Caribbean and as a child, we would make reference to Timbuktu whenever someone had to travel a long distance or took long to arrive from somewhere. "You went to Timbuktu?"
I didn't learn that Timbuktu was an actual place or of its history till my late teens. To me and many others, it was just a saying with no context. It is amazing how that name survived for centuries in our people's vocabulary.

This is so needed. We are responsible for educating our children about our culture, not anyone else.

PLEASE Africans guard those books so that the historical thieves don't help themselves to those books 📚📚📚📚📚📚📚.

Kudos to those families that had the foresight to protect that knowledge. Those forces that seek to bury it and rewrite history are never ending.

That's incredible, I thought all the books and manuscripts were destroyed. Would love to read what they contain.

I have listened to other videos on the Mali heritage (A few years ago) and is so amazing and wonderful that these things are coming forward to the world at large. I was at church (In the U.S.) a few Sundays ago and met a husband and wife. The wife was from the U.S. and the husband was from Mali. I was so excited to meet the husband from Mali since before listening to this video I had already listened to videos about the thriving Mali kingdom and their great leader. It made my introduction to this fellow more interesting. History can cause us to appreciate the importance of other cultures. I wish we could learn more about the specifics of some of the knowledge about medicine and other subjects in those ancient books. I had read about some of the ancient manuscripts of the Quran in Mali from the Middle Ages still exist there. There is so much more we can learn.

A YouTuber recently described European culture as a ball of insecurity protected by a wrapping of violence. Touche!

🇬🇧 Wow!
The main building of learning with it's ancient library, put me exactly in mind of the British Houses of Parliament!

Its architecture looked so much like
Our own seat of government, it is uncanny!
The scripts, texts & manuscripts are amazing, I love looking at the beautiful manuscripts from any culture, true skill & workmanship to be proud of.

I once read a book about ancient religious & academic works including ( I'm not sure of the spelling) the Kebra Nast, a kind of ancient Bible from East Africa, I think.
It was incredible reading.

I did once visit Djibouti in mid East Africa, only for a few days
also different parts of Eygpt,
The Lebanon, Morocco.

This was in the late 1960s + i was only 12yrs old but intensely interested in all of these places.
as were my parents.
our holidays were never spent on beaches, only places of ancient cultures.

im so pleased to have experienced
these places, it was a whole education in itself.
so yearly we took 6 or 8 weeks travelling all over the world, so marvellous.

thank you for this video, i admit i love videos about what Africa once looked like, thousands of years ago
when swathes of now desert, used to be green, fertile rich lands with great culture.

im also a keen reader about an ancient King called Prester John
from the lands in the far south of Africa, think it was called Ophir, the stories about his Kingdom are marvellous
especially his Magic Mirror

This incredible Mirror with a large square mirror-screen, in which Prester John, would press a button + be able to see any area in his kingdom
Think... Computer Screen, showing him, in real time, what was happening, in any place + hed see people walking about etc.

remnants of a prior high tech civilisation, who knows.

thank you once again
peace + good cheer
