Tetris is actually based on a more complex puzzle game from the creator's childhood, which utilized pentominoes. He, Alexey Pajitnov, felt the game would be needlessly complicated if he used 5-squared pieces, which allowed for 12 different variations, so he simplified it to four-squared tetrominoes, with only 7 variations.
There's a lot of people who have attempted to put some kind of message or meaning behind this game since its inception, especially because it originated in the Soviet Union. I've seen people say it's about the struggles of being a worker, or about the human need to make order from chaos, and more. I don't think it has a meaning, the creator just enjoyed puzzles. Games don't need to be about anything. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
