ALEKS Math – How To Get READY For The ALEKS Math Placement Test

The ALEKS Math Placement Test is often required for students enrolling in college. The purpose of the ALEKS Test is to see what math course you will place into at your school. The main idea to do well on the ALEKS Test is to master key math skills and topics. In this video I will explain how to solve a linear equation and how to effectively study and review for ALEKS Math Placement Test.

Bring all the m's on one side of the =, usually left and all constants on the other side
7m + 5 - 16m + 2 = 12m + 9
7m - 16m - 12m = 9 - 5 - 2
-21m = 2
-21m/-21 = 2/-21
m = -(2/21)

Seems simple enough. Let’s dig in:
7m + 5 - 2(8m - 1) = 12m + 9
Solving for m, we will be moving all the terms with m to one side of the equation. First, though, let’s multiply that 8m - 1 term by the 2 in front of it (Remember: a(b - c) = ab - ac):
7m + 5 - (16m - 2) = 12m + 9
The minus in from of the 16m - 2 term distributes as follows:
7m + 5 - 16m + 2 = 12m + 9
Combining terms on the left:
-9m + 7 = 12m + 9
Now, we can move all terms with m to the left side by subtracting 12m on both sides. We also subtract 7 from both sides to move anything else to the right:
-21m = 2
Finally, divide both sides by -21 to get m by itself:
m = -2/21

For extra credit, let’s make sure this checks with our starting equation:
7m + 5 - 2(8m - 1) = 12m + 9, m =? -2/21
7(-2/21) + 5 - 2(8(-2/21) - 1) =? 12(-2/21) + 9
-2/3 + 5 - 2(-16/21 - 1) =? -8/7 + 9
-2/3 + 15/3 - 2(-16/21 - 21/21) =? -8/7 + 63/7
13/3 - 2(-37/21) =? 55/7
13/3 - (-74/21) =? 55/7
91/21 + 74/21 =? 165/21
165/21 = 165/21
