I remember Earthworm Jim being fun but pretty challenging. The level going through intestines with the villi was ridiculously hard.

When i was a kid I thought the Driver tutorial was the whole game, imagine my surprise when I beat it and found the rest of the game

Oddworld was genius. The difficulty ramped up well and it just expected you to keep up.

So when you bought Myst it came with a blank journal for you to use to keep track of everything. It was actually super cool because as you worked through the game and took notes, it'd end up looking very, very similar to the journal in the game (notes, little drawings, etc).

Ghosts N' Goblins was the game that got me hooked on gaming back in the mid 80's. Super hard, but I love it. And the music was excellent.

I loved Tomb Raider games as a kid, I would get stuck a lot, but I also learned that there always is a way and I discovered new secrets every time I played it again

I watched through this whole thing waiting for A Boy and His Blob, and then I realized it was released in 1989. That is the first game that comes up in my mind when I think of hard games in my childhood.

That first level of Driver can hardly be called a tutorial since it doesn't teach you how to do anything. It's more like an exam that expects you to have mastery of a game you've never played, before you can actually play it.

I beat Driver. I remembering feeling like I just accomplished something almost impossible.
