Sarcasm also works when mean thoughts fill your head. Which happens to me. And i have yet a good example of sarcasm. But it'd be a bit obvious. When someone you don't like says: ''Now i don't have to beat you up'' you have to say: (*sarcastically*) ''Phew. That's a relief. I was sooo terrified''

So apparently when being sarcastic you need to have a 'tell'. Otherwise people won't understand you are being sarcastic and will interpret your sarcasm in another way.
