In today's tutorial, you will learn how to permanently disable Windows defender real time protection on Windows 10.
Go to the left bottom corner of your desktop and click on windows icon. The start menu will pop up. You can see a small gear, above the same windows icon, click on it. It opens a Windows Settings tab. Go to ‘Update & Security’.
Select ‘Windows security’ from the left side menu. Click on ‘Open Windows Security’. Choose ‘Virus& Threat protection’ from the left side list. Look for ‘Virus & threat protection settings’. Click on ‘Manage settings’. Turn the switch off next to Real-time protection option. Click on ‘yes’ in the pop-up window.
Go to taskbar search and type ‘regedit’. Click on ‘Registry Editor’ to open. Click on ‘yes’ in the pop-up window.
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder. Go to SOFTWARE folder. Look for Policies and open Microsoft. Right-click on the Windows defender folder. Select ‘New-Key’. Name it ‘Real-Time Protection’.
Right-click on the right side of the window and select ‘New Value’. Name it ‘DisableRealtimeMonitoring’. Double-click on the file. Set Value data to 1. Click ‘Ok’.
Click on the Windows defender icon at the taskbar. Look for ‘Virus & threat protection settings’. Click on ‘Manage settings’. You can see the real time protection is now disabled permanently.

For those of you when you restart your pc and it turns back on, go to where you turn on real time protection and scroll down a little and turn off Tamper Protection. Change the registry again and it will stay disabled.

Since the group policy object for this feature doesn't work anymore, this seems to be the only option. Real-time protection is one of the worst things mankind ever invented. It only makes your PC slower. Security can also be maintained by being a little cautious and read into the matter and scan exe files on demand.

As a C programmer, it's extremely annoying for my programs to be constantly flagged as "Viruses". Thanks so much!

Dude you are legend, I just did this on Windows 10 Pro ver 2004, Windows Defender shows that "This setting is managed by your administrator." at "Real Time protection" section and it won't come on anymore.

Oh thank you so much. This stupid feature has caused nothing but headaches, frustration and pure rage! It causes save game files not to work or even save, errors in loading games. It was disabling RDR2 and PC2 from loading.

When I restarted windows the Realtime protection was turned back on because windows had removed my edit to the registry. So I just turned off the Tamper Protection setting and followed these steps again & windows didnt delete the key I created in the registry and the Real-time protection now stays off. If you re-enable the Tamper Protection setting at any stage windows will delete the value from the key you created in the registry upon reboot. So it seems the only way for this to work is to leave Tamper Protection off.
