Lunar Eclipse - Why does the moon turn red? | Blood Moon | Red Moon | BYJU'S Celestial Wonder

November 8 is another lunar eclipse 2022. Lunar eclipse occurs when Earth is between the sun and the moon. We know that the moon doesn’t produce light of its own, it only shines or reflects the sunlight falling on it. Earth blocks this sunlight from falling on the moon, and hence, we get the lunar eclipse.
But hold on, why does the moon simply disappear during the lunar eclipse? Instead, the eclipse makes the moon red.

So, why is the colour of the moon red during lunar eclipse? Well, a phenomenon called scattering is responsible for this celestial wonder. It turns out that Earth doesn’t indeed stop all light from reaching the moon. When the entire moon falls in the deepest parts of Earth’s shadow, the red wavelengths of light reach there because of bending and scattering by the earth’s atmosphere. Called Rayleigh scattering, it is the same effect which is responsible for our blue sky and red sunsets and sunrises.

While eastern parts of India will see a total lunar eclipse and hence another blood moon 2022, the other parts will only see a partial lunar eclipse. Do you think a partial lunar eclipse leads to a blood moon as well?
Let us know your theories on this upcoming astronomical event and stay tuned to BYJU’s celestial wonders for more!

white colour because if there is no atmosphere then, all the 7 rays of light or white ray will hit the moon and will reflect white

With no atmosphere there wouldnt be any bending of the light right? So black

Once i saw a red moon but idk if it was the Lunar Eclipse and it was so beatiful and im from Slovakia

Then also it will be red colour only I think, because the cloudy dust particles in the universe scatters away all the light with shorter wavelengths. But mostly the light from the sun may be blocked by the earth and bending of light (refraction) may not be possible in the absence of atmosphere so in that case it appears black (or invisible moon). In another case, if all the light falls on the moon then it appears to be white.

"Black" because no red light will bend towards moon and our sky will not appears blue and when no light falls on moon no reflection seen by us so it will appears black

The color of a moon is red during lunar eclipse

It would white because no atmosphere to take blue light and all seven colours meet to make it white

If earth has so atmosphere Moons appear black while lunar eclipse and completely black during total lunar eclipse.
