NASA | Understanding Lunar Eclipses

It's not often that we get a chance to see our planet's shadow, but a lunar eclipse gives us a fleeting glimpse. During these rare events, the full Moon rapidly darkens and then glows red as it enters the Earth's shadow. Though a lunar eclipse can be seen only at night, it's worth staying up to catch the show. The next lunar eclipse visible from the western hemisphere will take place in the early morning hours of April 15, 2014, from about 2:00 am - 5:30 am Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Thank you for such a great visual demonstration of how eclipses work! The question of "why don't eclipses happen every month" is always best answered with a good visual aid, and this video sure takes the cake!

When the moon is in the penumbra of the shadow of earth what kind of eclipse occurs?

From c.s. briar below:
"This is essentially all of the Earth's sunsets being reflected off the moon's surface."
Thank you for making this point. This info should have been in the video. Makes more sense now.

Looking intently at the tapered shapes of the Earth's dark shadow and gray/red "sunset" shadow in relation to the moon's distance from the Earth makes it more clearly understandable as to why the dark to red transition takes place. Apparently the dark shadow to red shadow ratio changes as the moon moves through.
