Vision Pro from a Developer's Perspective

I was lucky enough to have a 30-minute hands-on demo of Apple's new Vision Pro headset, alongside a 90-minute run-through of new APIs at their developer center. In this video I want to walk through my experience: my impressions of the demo, tell you what I think it means for developers, and give you some advice of what it takes to prepare your app for Vision Pro ahead of release.

This video is aimed specifically at developers; I'll be talking about SwiftUI, RealityKit, ARKit, and more. If you're looking for a more mainstream review of the device, this video won't be much fun!

I don't know about the Vision Pro but the color of that shirt is fantastic.

Noise cancelling audio for the fans for the speakers? I was already blown away by this but holy sh.... this is beyond impressive. I can't wait for the next iterations.

Thanks for this. Perhaps because I’m an IT person, I actually found your video (by far), the most informative yet about the new Vision Pro headset. All the other commentary I’ve seen are just layman interpretations of what we all saw for ourselves in the keynote. Thank you. Much appreciated.

Paul! I can tell that you’re a fantastic developer because you understand the broader picture beyond the technology itself and how it functions. Even though you obviously spend plenty of time coding and making software work, you show that you have never lost your sense of empathy for how end users perceive technology and how it works with their life. I compliment you because I’m so passionate about user interface and user interaction and I’ve seen so many user interfaces that are functional but not necessarily user-centric. Instead, they are unfortunately computer-centric. I think this stems from lack of empathy that software engineers can sometimes display. However, it’s clear to me that in reviewing this new device that you see beyond its parts and performance—to its POTENTIAL! Thank you!

Hey, this provides some helpful insights on how developing for visionOS works. Thanks for the video, and as always keep at what you’re doing, you’re really helping a lot of people out here me included! I’m rooting for you 🙌🏾

this is easily the BEST review, and i've watched many, because you explained the feelings of using it so well, it was so much better than those who used lots of the demo clips etc.
this felt like i understand the experience along with you. this is like a mate down the pub telling you about the madness they just experienced, and telling it so well that you don't want to interrupt, you want them to carry on.
thank you so much, i'll get you a pint just to hear more about what you got to say 🙏👍 ❤💯 love your passion mate, i love the nerds, i always have. at school i'd protect them

I absolutely plan on grabbing one of these for myself. Between visionOS and SwiftData, I am properly excited to get back into Swift development. I've been tootling around the fringes for years (Swift 1.0 was my second programming language) after switching to data science but this is all too exciting not to get involved with. Excited for what is coming to HWS+ as well, so many new things to learn!

I’m not a developer but this was a great point of view of the experience of wearing the Vision PRO!! Great video

Finally, joy! I've consumed every Vision Pro review I can get my hands on and finally somebody recognizes this for the lifetime event it is. Paul doesn't nitpick the nascent specs we can read about but rather shares the experience of being 'inside'. Even with his years of experience you feel his excitement and it draws you in - and you wonder. Thank you!

Will you buy one? Of course, this is a new way to see the world.

What an amazing reward from Apple for all the hard work opening up and explaining Apple platforms to us developers!

This is the most in depth and easily digestible vision pro review and explainer on YouTube. Cheers!

I've been following along your 100 Days of SwiftUI in preparation for the Vision Pro. If you did a similar course for visionOS, I'd subscribe to it in a heart beat! Keep up the great content!

I tell ya, Paul, I've watched just about every review of Vision Pro published out here on YT. All pretty damn positive...which is amazing for a new product. But your reflections on it are the best...and I'm not even interested in coding or development. Thanks for your well considered thoughts. Edit: And BTW- I'm a 67 yo retiree looking forward to gettin my Vision Pro glasses for my 2025 Father's Day gift. I'm figuring by then the price will be (close to) right. I've already gotten the word out to my off spring. They can start saving now.

Thanks for a great review from a developer viewpoint - I'm also an iOS developer currently, and the potential of this thing I think is astounding. I am working on a few ideas already solidifying which I'll end up doing as I get a feel for what might work well on the device... I feel the same way about this platform as I did watching the first iPhone get released. Looking forward to whatever educational materials might be forthcoming after the SDK comes out later this month! I plan Toby the device for sure, am really hoping I can get a Deve kit earlier but if not will be making a few trips to Cupertino.

The way you are explaining is already much more detailed than I’ve heard and I watched countless vision videos

Excellent. I'm very much looking forward to your coding videos on this. Also this is the first video I've seen that mentioned sound leak. It's good to now that won't really be an issue. Thanks!
